Moustapha Ndiaye, Gurba’s Critique

The Tone of Surprise is what brought to my attention as I read the opening piece of Gurba’s Writing. She came out real feisty and it gave me a sense of aggression, but in a good way. She expresses her feelings and she shows how she doesn’t want the situation to be ignored and left the way it is. I enjoy the way she uses Spanglish during her argument because she wants her point to reach people who look down on Mexicans. Gurba Speaks about stereotypes portrayed by whites and how they couldn’t possibly understand what it’s like to be Mexican. Gurba says white people should not write about Mexicans because they don’t understand what it is like to be Mexican or experience living in Mexico. She also speaks about Jeanine referring to Mexicans as “These People” like they are not on the same level or make it seem like other races are superior than Mexicans. How does Gurba deal with Stereotypes? What are ways that she approaches the situation?

I think you asked great questions and I also enjoyed the way she incorporated spanglish into her writing. It felt like she was having a conversation with me because I am able to understand the spanish words. Her choice of words made her writing seem conversational which made me enjoy it more because it wasn’t monotonous.
