Amani Nassar, Critique on Gurba

I think Gurba’s piece was a pretty good read. I enjoyed how blunt and confident she was in her writing, not shying away from her true feelings on the subject. She was enraged and offended hearing about her culture/heritage being wrongly portrayed from someone who could not even relate to being a Mexican living in Mexico. I thought the inclusion of Spanish words also gave her writing great style as it showed us more of Gurba sassy personality and allowed her to stay true to her Hispanic background. Creating this critique was a very bold move on Gurba’s behalf and I think it worked out in her favor after reading some of the comments at the end of her piece. Hearing about her personal struggles and uncomfortable circumstances made this piece even more empowering. One question I do have is, what was the turning point that made Gurba know for sure she had to make a critique like this?

I agree with you on the sassy-ness that Gurba was able to show through the page with her diction. This critique more than likely isn’t her first, and I’m sure she was criticized on every single one. She’s probably had enough of those who haven’t gone through the experience to know for themselves. Gurba’s blood is boiling beyond imagination with how prideful she is; she deserves to be when people spread wrong information about the culture to the mass.
