July 11th, 2015. Seven steps he can take before he is at the desk, he turns and faces back the other way, another seven steps and he is in the shower. Cell number 20, caged like an animal. He sits on his back nervous, in pain, and sweating, trying to look normal for the surveillance cameras that track all his moves. It’s almost time to go, his team that he had contact with two days ago has broken through. A warm Saturday night, only the second shift guards are here and they’re lazy, drinking beers and counting their bribe money as they watch TV and play poker on their computers. He gets up from his bed and goes to the only blind spot in his sight. Behind the privacy wall of his shower, he, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera known as “El Chapo” escapes from the altiplano supermax prison like a magician for the second time leaving a note “El Chapo was here” on the wall.

His heart is racing, when he finally reaches the tunnel, a long climb down with 32 feet – 10 meters, his wife’s brothers and one of his men are waiting for him. They slapped him on the back and hugged him saying “it’s good to see you, it’s been a long time.” He gets on a motorcycle to be towed down the tunnel away from the prison.
People say a lot about him, some pray for him to go to heaven for bringing work to their villages, others curse him under their breath saying that he is a monster, devil, perhaps he is all these things they say he is. So what, first and foremost, he, the illiterate kid from the Sinaloa is now a businessman acknowledged even by Forbes magazine. By 2009 El Chapo was on a list ranking number 701 on the world’s richest men on the planet. He smirked and thought only if they knew how much he really was worth he’d be way higher on that list. He supplies products that people want. He has never forced anyone to buy his products. He does not kill for the sake of killing, he does not enjoy seeing a light fade away from someone’s eyes, leaving children without fathers, but sometimes he does that for the cost of his business. Now that he is out of prison and home, stank from the prison smell eats good food, and sleeps on a soft bed. He is excited to see his twin girls who are grown to be small children from toddlers. He hopes they remember him. He will throw a big party, relax with a few friends and get back to work. Because after all, he is El Chapo.
