After reading Douglas speech I believe the issue he is really trying to bring forth to the American people is the fact that slavery is a topic that needs to be more discussed and the people of modern times needs to be educated more in this subject since misconception of slavery still exists and also how the rich are the ones who really inherit the liberty and the freedom of this great Americans society while the lesser fortunate ones are the ones who truly suffers.

“The fact is,ladies and gentlemen, the  distance between this platform and the slave plantation, from which I escaped, is considerable—and the difficulties to be overcome in getting from the  latter to the former, are by no means slight.” Through this quote Douglas is trying to convey the fact that the slave life was an extremly hard life to live and to get out of such a system and to find yourself in something higher is no lesser feat at all which realy goes to show just how hard the slaves had it back in the days.

“ Feeling themselves harshly and unjustly treated, by the home government, your fathers, like  men of  honesty, and men of spirit, earnestly sought redress. They petitioned and remonstrated;” In this quote Douglas is trying to compare both black and white men how they were both subjects of British rule and also how they both rose up to the British government and fought for freedom yet slavery exists which does not make any sense when both parties fought side by side to achieve freedom and liberty.
