Summary:

This article by John Hein talks about how police culture could be changed , and it’s based on an investigator’s perspective. An officer’s attitude towards a citizen is the most important factor because you don’t want a citizen feeling unsafe, and like they cannot trust you. Making A Change; Depending on how a police officer approaches a citizen such as their mood, personal approach, or even demeanor [behavior towards others] a successful encounter with a citizen could occur. Also, police should understand when it’s the right situation to use force, and when not to use force. Officers should start to understand what the citizen is going through before approaching them in a way they might feel threatened. Achieving Respect; With the topic of respect officers should be concerned with the citizens sense of honor, and respect. Many citizens don’t respect officers because they feel like officers don’t respect them, they rather the officer to be verbal instead of making everything physical. When officers become physical this breaks the trust between them, and the citizens.

Reflection

I do agree with this text because everyone should feel safe when they are around police officers but as the years go by police officers are just getting worse and killing innocent people for no reason. Police officers learning how to be around people they are arresting would make the world a better place, and police brutality would not be a thing anymore. One thing I would say this author is thank you for creating article, although police brutality is still around today at least someone is high alert about the issues that are going on regarding police officers. The author’s intended audience are police officers around the world especially in New York, Ferguson, and Chicago who brutality attack or even kill innocent people they are arresting. Also, their purpose is to put an end to police brutality because it’s getting out of hand.

“Today’s officer must not only understand his or her own moral and culture values, but the many cultures and values of others. A dedicated officer also must be concerned with a citizen’s sense of honor and respect.”
