Dear future students,

My name is Yaire Castillo and I am a freshman in City tech college, majoring in law and paralegal studies to become a criminal defense attorney. I am writing to you so you can have a glimpse on what it felt like taking this course. When you take this class, you will be assigned many micro-activities. It may seem like a lot of work but if you know how to balance your school life, you will be just fine. Once you get used to those micro-activities it won’t seem like a lot of work to complete, it will just become a habit. Look out for the micro-activities because they truly prepare you for the major assignments that you will have to complete. For Unit 1 we had to do a writing assignment on any Discourse Community that we wanted to write about. Unit 3 focused on making multimodal projects on a topic that we felt passionate about and wanted to educate others about. Unit 1 and Unit 3 were the assignments that stayed with me. Why? Well, because it gave me the opportunity to truly discover what I was passionate about. I wrote about women not having the same equal rights as men and how women are negatively treated in immigration detention centers. My advice to you is, write about something that you truly want to talk about. Something that you just need to get off your chest, because those types of topics are going to keep you on your toes! You’ll be excited to do your assignment and get a good grade on it. Just like many other students I didn’t imagine learning online for my first year of college. At times, you will feel very overwhelmed and exhausted but keep going! Remember your goals, remind yourself that you are strong and intelligent. Personally, in the beginning I wanted to give up because I just didn’t have any motivation and I felt very discouraged. But then I realized that it was perfectly normal to feel like that. I reminded myself everyday on how badly I wanted to become an attorney and it motivated me to keep going strong. So please try to motivate yourself everyday, no matter how hard it gets, stay strong! This english class will show you that reading and writing is fun. It will also teach you how to be responsible with your work and send things before the deadline. Something that you will need for your everyday life. Lastly, it will teach you new things that you never knew about. This class truly changed me as a reader, writer and scholar. Professor Penner is very understanding so she won’t give you more than she thinks you can handle. She will make announcements reminding you what you have to do for the following week and be available to talk if you ever have any questions about the work. That being said, I hope that whoever is reading this takes my advice and has fun in this class!

Sincerely,

Yaire Castillo
