Quote 1: you have no right to enjoy a child share in the labor of your fathers unless your children are to beblest by your Labor (page 7)

Paraphrase: you should not enjoy the labor of which your father in their fathers have their slave to. Unless you teach your children to cherish their own labor

Response: The Fourth of July it’s not a day of freedom for most slaves they see their selves still bounded today so this quote just was speaking about how white people should not feel the need to celebrate a day in which we were free or their country was free because the slaves are the one that did all the labor and built this country to be the way it is today.

Quote 2: do you mean citizens mock me by asking me to speak today? If so there is a parallel to your conduct. (Page 8)

Paraphrase: did you want the citizens to mimic me by axing me to speak today? If so there is a similar meaning to your conduct.

Response: this quote was basically saying the citizens and or the white people were trying to be better than their fathers in the means how slaves were free and back then when they were slaves English, learning and speaking was kind of hard for them because they weren’t speaking proper English they weren’t going to school so Frederick Douglass is basically saying that he felt as if they were trying to make fun of him by making him speak for this Fourth of July occasion and that if they were trying to make fun of him they were exactly like their father’s.

Quote 3: they all changes, but silver, gold and copper change! Of this sort of change they always strongly favor.  (Page3)

Identify the writing strategy you see Douglass using: use currency and!‘s to show demands and show hatred. The writing strategy is a metaphor.

Explain why you find this useful, persuasive, or effective in some way: I find this quote persuasive because everybody really love the talk of money so by using silver gold or copper it could be used as both money and jewelry at the same time.

Quote 4: but your fathers, who had not adopted the fashionable idea of the day, of the infallibility of government and the absolute character of its act, presume to differ from the home government in respect to wisdom and the justice of some of those burden and restraint.(page 2)

Identify the writing strategy you see Douglass using: The writing strategy I see Frederick Douglass using is a claim

Explain why you find this useful, persuasive, or effective in some way: I feel like this is useful and effective because it just shows that their fathers thought of their self differently from the way that they were actually seen as. They wanted the respect but they never gave the respect back and they had the wisdom. This Just states a fact.

    Hello Dyrish,

I agree with you. Douglas makes very strong claims followed by clear cut evidence to backup his points. By doing this, Douglas gives a strong message to the reader. However, I believe this isnt his strongest form of writing strategy. I noticed that Douglas constantly brings up questions that he can tie back to the overall main point of that specific part of the paragraph.
