Week 4 Lab Report by Frank Mason

Objective: Disassemble a Linksys srp 8 gigabit port network switch, document all of the parts, understand how each individual part functions and reassemble the device.

Materials: 8 gigabit ports for input, 1 serial port, 2 minigbic serial port connectors, power input, 48 volt dc 3.1 amp, 1 standard edison plug, capacitor to store an electrical charge, long screw to connect to connector on the bottom,

Procedure: Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the rubber feet.

Experience difficulties trying to open the plastic box of the switch, unless you have vice grips, screwdriver and a drill.

Take picture of the inside of the network switch box.

Remove front basil of the network switch box as well as the back basil to view the circuit board inside the network switch box.

Take pictures for each network switch, their circuits and label their parts for documentation purposes.

Results: We were successfully able to disassemble the Linksys 8 gigabit port network switch, albeit with much difficulty and understand the inner workings of the device. The screws connecting the two halves of the box together would not be come apart for a while (10-20 minutes). Many tools were used such as phillips head screwdrivers, drills, flathead screwdrivers, and the suggestion of throwing the box on the floor and breaking it open was always on hand but never used. We were able to document it using camera phones to take pictures of the circuit boards of both network switch devices.
