In the previous module, Learning with the OpenLab, you learned about the OpenLab, how to create your OpenLab account, and set up your Profile. And you’ve learned the basics about Profiles and Sites, and about participating in an OpenLab Course.
Now, you’ll learn how to create your own site!
What kind of site should you build?
You can create a Portfolio site, a Project site, or a Club site. Read on to determine which kind of site fits your needs.
Portfolio Site
Your Portfolio site is a your own academic and/or professional site. It is a digital collection of your academic work, interests, and achievements. It belongs to you and you can add to it throughout your time at City Tech. By graduation it can showcase your best work, your resume, and your professional goals, ready to share with a potential internship, employer, or a graduate program. You can create only one Portfolio site, and it is your site alone. While you should document class and research projects as a structured part of your portfolio site, faculty should never ask you to use it for a single course. That’s what a Project site is for!
Project Site
Project sites can be used for multiple purposes and you can make as many Project sites as you need. Students can create a Project site to showcase a culmination project, research project, student publication, or anything else that needs a private or public-facing website. Anyone can create a Project site, and Projects can have multiple members who can all contribute to the site.
Club Site
Anyone can create a Club site on the OpenLab. A Club site can serve as an online extension of an in-person City Tech club or any new club you dream up. If updated regularly, this online space can serve as a way to inform other students of club meetings and activities, have discussions about events and other club-related matters, share club materials, and maintain a web presence beyond social media.
This module focuses on Portfolios
Of the three, a Portfolio is more common to use as your own site, so that’s what the rest of this module covers. Projects and Clubs are created the same way as you create a Portfolio, so once you’ve built your Portfolio, you’ll know how to create a Project and Club, as well.
