Head Start & Preschool Oral Health Education

As part of my Public Health course, I worked with my classmates to provide oral health education to young children in our community. We visited a local preschool to teach children (ages 3–5) how to keep their teeth healthy. We used a fun, interactive lesson about “sugar bugs” to explain how cavities form and showed them the right way to brush and floss.

We also visited a Head Start site to work with 2-year-olds. For this group, we had to simplify our presentation because they are so young. We focused on making the dental visit feel safe and used basic games to show them how to “brush the bugs away.” This project was a great lesson in how to adapt my communication style to help different age groups understand their health.
