What is the meaning of the term? You may have heard the term ā€œO.E.R.,ā€ and wondered ā€“ what exactly does it mean? O.E.R. refers to any educational content that is ā€˜freeā€™ and ā€˜openly-licensed.ā€™

  • Free ā€“ No cost to students, so no exorbitant textbook prices
  • Openly-licensed ā€“ When something is ā€˜openly-licensed,ā€™ it means that the author/creator has made their work available for others to use,  share, and adapt, typically by licensing the work with a Creative Commons license or other open-source license

Why O.E.R.? This type of ā€œopenā€ sharing is a newer model, different than what is permitted under traditional copyright. O.E.R. has the potential to make education more affordable and increasing access by offering free course materials.
