New York City College of Technology Health Fair

NYCCT really values their students and always finds a way to incorporate their students into programs. We were asked to participate in a health fair on November 8, 2012 where we were asked to provide basic screening and education. We were responsible for measuring height and weight, calculating BMI, checking pulse, and blood pressure.

We were able to provide emotional support to students who needed someone to talk to which was not required; but, as nurses we are required to look and care for people holistically. We were amazed to see just how many student’s had an elevated blood pressure which most claimed was a result of stress. This gave us the opportunity to once again educate our community and encourage others to visit their primary health care provider with the results we recorded.

Blood Pressure Screening

On October 19, 2012 NSNA members were asked to take manual blood pressure and educate employees at a Church regarding their blood pressure and what the numbers represented. It was a great event and we enjoyed being able to use our nursing knowledge to help others in the community. It reinforced the idea that being nurse doesn’t only happen when we are by the patient’s bedside.
