ENG 1151 Week 6

The reading “Jordan’s King Among Leaders Accused of Amassing Secret Property Empire” shows how King Abdullah was among 35 current and former leaders to use secret shell companies to hide their wealth. Then as the reading goes on it also shows how the King was accused of using shell companies to buy 15 properties. They were worth more than $100 million. Mostly in Southeast England, Washington D.C., and in Malibu. The journalist is certainly doing it’s job as a watchdog because they are showing how the King is being exposed to hiding his wealth from various different countries. The 15 properties were registered to be in the Caribbean. There were claims against him that showed 300 public officials that used shell companies to disguise their wealth. The first amendment is not “Fake News.” In the reading Facebook took down Donald Trump’s account and wanted to either suspend him permanently or let him back. Then Trump released a statement and called Facebook’s ruling as an insult. This was to the 75 million people who voted for him in the election in 2020.

Purpose of Journalism

One thing that I read from the article that shows that it’s doing their job is how they seek the truth. One of the key points I noticed in the article was how journalism is a storytelling purpose. It’s not just to gather the audience but tell the readers the truth on what they have to know that is important. Another key point I’ve noticed in the article is to not ignore citizens. Ignoring the citizens is the effect of disenfranchising them. When it comes to journalistic truth it is the process of verifying and assembling the facts. They have to provide the truth and be transparent. Lastly, with journalism you are also bringing people into the conversation because you want to add someone’s voice to the conversation.

ENG 1151 post

The part that I found interesting in the article “Can Afghanistan’s leader Broadcaster Survive the Taliban?” was how the Taliban’s were trained to not mistreat the women and that the safest place for them was to be at home.In the article “Ebony returns to Chronicle a New Moment” the part I found most interesting was how Ebony and Jet were the most arguably chroniclers of black entertainers, civil rights leaders, athletes, writers and business people. Also how Ebony is making a comeback in the media environment. In the article “Did I Really Just Buy Ebony” a writing strategy I would mention that Eden is talking about is having your voices heard and being the voice of the people. You wanna be living in a place where you can talk and let your voice be heard.
