Case study #3: Arestin

44 years old, white male, Medium Type II

Recare patient. Patient requested Arestin to be placed. Medical History: WNL, patient is non-smoker, non-drinker. Patient does not take any medications and has no allergies. ASA I. Last dental visit and dental cleaning were 6 moths ago in November 2019, FMS were taken 1 month ago in March 2019. Patient reported brushing his teeth twice daily with electric toothbrush and Colgate toothpaste, flossing with waxed floss once in a while, no oral rinses. Vitals: BP is 113/80, pulse is 66. Extra-oral examination revealed slight redness on the patients occipital scalp region. Patient reported to have an allergic reaction to a shampoo. Deviation of the TMJ on the left side. Patient reported to have surgery many years ago. Bone was removed in this area because of polyp in the nose. During Intra-oral examination a centered fissured tongue and a white coating of the tongue were noted. Dental: Bilateral class I Occlusion, overjet 4mm, overbite 50%. Attrition was present on the #6-#11, #22-#27. Generalized moderate extrinsic brown staining and generalized medium subgingival deposits were present on the lingual surfaces. Gingiva is generally pink, rolled margins on posteriors, bulbous on mandibular anteriors, not firm, not resilient. Patient was qualified as Medium type II.

Based upon assessment, the patient was a good candidate for Arestin placement due to generalized moderate bleeding upon probing, localized 5-6mm pocket depths in the posterior regions and generalized horizontal bone loss. After completing scaling and root planning procedures, an Arestin consent was signed by the patient and  Arrestin was placed on 2 DL 13 MB, 13 DB, 14 MB, 14 DB, 19 DL, 24 MB, 31 MB, 20 ML, 24 MB, 29 DB. Post-operative instructions were given to the patient. Patient came back for Arestin evaluation four weeks later. Improvements were noticed on all sites. Arestin worked great for the patient, therefore patient left happy and satisfied. Recare 6 months.
