Each week you will need to respond to two questions posted. Your response should be a minimum of 150 words for both questions. You should also include at least one response to your fellow students. The responses are a requirement for participation part of your grade.

Question 01 –

Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

Question 02 –

When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

    Question 1:

In my opinion, low poly portraits ought to incorporate triangles as they aid in creating depth and prevent the image from having a two-dimensional appearance. Using shapes with four sides in the portrait would result in the low poly portraits appearing lackluster and having a two-dimensional appearance. I also think that triangles contribute to the creation of shadows and increase the level of contrasts, thereby making the design more visually appealing compared to using four-sided shapes.

    Question 2:

If you wish for a shape to exhibit various effects or hues, it would be beneficial to attach additional fills to it. A cake serves as an instance of applying numerous fillings onto an item. It is necessary to keep a record of the colors used on the cake and its embellishments. If you desire to insert more than one filling to an item in Illustrator, access the appearance feature by selecting the window option from the top of the program window. The appearance panel displays the fills and effects of an object upon clicking on it.

    Question 01 –

I think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles rather than other polygons because it is a simpler shape which allows it to become in different forms to make the types of shadows and highlights you need. A triangle would allow you to make almost a line if you put them next to each other but other polygons wouldn’t be as smooth. Triangles can also fit into each other and line up perfectly next to each other, if you put two triangles next to each other lined up you can create a good contrast shape for the shadows in your portrait. If a portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes rather than triangles it wouldn’t look as good because the four-sided shape won’t create the same lines of shapes that a triangle could. A four-sided shape could create a line and curve but I think it would require more squares to create them than it would require to make when using triangles.

    Question 02 –

It would be useful to add multiple fills to a shape in a design if you want to add more detail or depth to it. Adding multiple fills to a shape is more useful than trying to add other things through layers because layers, if there is no lock, can move and they won’t move with your shape if you want to change the position. One example that this could be useful is when you are making a t-shirt or clothing because clothing isn’t usually just one shade because they have shadows and texture. If you have multiple fills you can also add a pattern to the shape which many clothing items have but they might also have some texture in addition to that. Adding all of the multiple fills will be in the shape and you and mode the shape without a problem, it would look more interesting and realistic.

    Question 01 –

Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

Low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles because triangles are one of the simplest existing polygons, and working with them is very flexible. If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, it would likely have a different overall look and design. This is because changing the shape would require us to have more polygons to have a similar level of detail as the triangles, or the image would look pixelated.

    Question 02 –

When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design when we want to create shadow and highlight in different areas of the same shape, by doing so we create depth.

    1) Using triangles are beneficial for making a polygon portrait because there are so many details and colors to the features that everything will come out more blocky than it will capture the accuracy of the face. The small triangles will be able to capture all the small little shadows, highlights and folds unlike drawing with square shapes to make the portrait.

    2) It will be useful to include multiple fills in a design when you are trying to create depth with the highlights and the shadows. For example, if you are designing a shirt, you would have to use multiple fills of the same color, ranging from different tints and shades, in order to create dimension to the piece.

    • Irin Yela

Yes making low poly portrait with triangles is more helpful then with other shapes, because it is more flexible.

  5. Nira Bouzgarrou

    1. Compared to other polygons, triangles tend to have a more angular and geometric appearance, which can work well with low poly art. Triangles’ acute angles and angular edges may give a portrait a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. The fact that triangles have fewer sides makes it easier to build and mold them into the required form and texture. A low poly portrait’s aesthetic effect would probably be different if it contained solely four-sided shapes rather than triangles.
    2. A butterfly is one particular object in Illustrator that might profit from having numerous fills. Several fills might be used to correctly depict the various patterns and hues found on a butterfly’s wings. The primary color of the wings might be filled with one fill, the complex patterns with another, and any further features or shading with a third fill. We could make a more realistic and aesthetically pleasing picture of a butterfly’s wings by employing several fills.
    • Jenise Roque

I agree with using triangles to the low poly portrait to create dimension. If you’re going to use squares instead of triangles, then the low poly portrait will come out a lot more blocky.

  6. Jeffrey Lin

q1) Low poly portraits should be made of triangles because triangles have fewer sides, which helps make these portraits look “low quality.” When building a 3d model, triangles are the easiest shape to make because they are the shape with fewer sides. A low poly portrait looks like a third-dimensional model. The complex depths and bumps can be made with triangles. It is visually impossible to make or imagine a low poly portrait made with pentagons, rhombuses, etc. If you made a low poly portrait with only four-sided shapes, it would not look good as a low poly portrait using only three-sided shapes because you cannot create the complex curves, bumps, and depths with only four-sided shapes. The triangles can help show where the lights are hitting on a portrait. When making a low poly portrait, make sure that the triangles aren’t too big, make them medium or small.

q2) It’s useful to add multiple fills to a shape if you want the shape to have effects or if you want more colors on that shape. An example of adding multiple fills to on object is a cake. You want to keep track of what colors you use on the cake and it’s decorations. To add multiple fills to a object, in illustrator, go to window on top of the illustrator window, then click on appearance. When you click on an object, the appearance panel shows the fills and effects the object has.

Question 01 –Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

I think that low poly portraits should be made using triangles because triangles help form dimensions and prevent the image from looking flat. If the portrait is made up of four-sided shapes it would make the low poly portraits look flat and two-dimensional. I also believe that the triangles help form shadows and allow more contrasts which help make the design look more pleasing than using any four-sided shapes.

Question 02 –When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape because it creates dimension and depth with the use of using light and dark colors to create a realistic effect. For example, if you’re creating something that has lighting coming from an angle and has shadows, you’re able to create the shadows and angles in similar places making it look realistic.

    • Jeffrey Lin

for q1, I agree that triangles help make the portrait three dimensional. For q2, for multiple fills, I agree with adding light and shadow to an object.

  8. Zi Hang Lian

Low poly portrait shows best results when using triangles because they have a pattern that are easy to work with. They have sharp edge that can easily connect each other. In the case you use four sided shapes, it can disrupt the balance of the portrait and can ruin the portrait, you’re making. Chance are there are some sharp edges somewhere in the portrait and it’ll go over it. With triangles, you’ll less likely made that mistake and make it safely inside the portrait.

Adding multiple fills to a design is useful because it gives the design color and shape. Let’s take our low poly portrait as an example. First off, we have complete the portrait using triangles using a black stroke. We then proceed to add multiple color fills to our portrait. Watch what happens when we get rid of the black stroke. We gave our portrait shape through the triangle we made for the portrait. We can expect the same results with other design. Even if it doesn’t follow the same rule, we’ll eventually give our design a shape through multiple fills.

    • Ebony Derrick

I agree with you, multiple fills will help define and shape our projects along with making them realistic.

    • Nira Bouzgarrou

A great way of explaining is when you said we gave our portrait shape through triangles.

Q1 – Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

I feel that triangles, more than any other shape, can help create a three-dimensional effect. Shadows in nature usually somewhat represent/remind us of triangular shapes. Four-sided shapes would create an image that looks flatter and is less adjustable and natural-looking. Additionally, it is possible to create multiple other shapes using triangles – four-sided shapes, as well as more complex ones.

Q2 – When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

Adding multiple fills can help create a more complex representation of an object, differentiating the details on shapes, adding tonalities, and representing light and shadow, thus making an object look realistic. For example, when creating a representation of a Xmas tree, we can use different colors of fill to specify certain branches/”levels” of the tree, separate the tree trunk from the greenery, and show the direction of light.

    • Zi Hang Lian

I agree. Using triangles does give our portrait a 3D feel through its sharp edges. 4 sided shape tends to be flatter and is hard to adjust. Most of the edges will pass through our portrait so keep that in mind.

Add multiple fills can definitely elevate our design and give it details and shape. We can definitely differentiate the part of a Xmas tree using multiple fills.

    • Maribel Royer

I agree with you on the different effects we can create to specific shapes by adding multiple fills. That helps us applying different shades of colors even when we use a monochromatic color scheme. Also, it allows us to represents lighting, shadow and Dimenssional impression to our objects, which makes them look more realistic.

  10. Ibrahima Diallo

The low poly portraits should be used and made up with only triangles because when you have about 3 or 4 triangles they can become a 3D shape which can actually be formed into more of an actual portrait. If the portrait was made up of nothing but 4 sided polygons there would probably be too much things going on, like it would be too busy. Sticking to the format of just triangles keeps everything right and doesn’t cause everything to be more combusted. Adding multiple fills of color to a design allows everyone to see how the light and shadow gives it a unique look. An example can be Sports hoodies such as Nike, Adidas, etc because within the solid colors they often have logos which can come in with different color schemes and wears.

    • Nastassia Molicheva

I agree with your point about colors adding light/shadow effects to the design, making it look fresh and giving it contrast.

  11. Basema Ikhmayes

Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

Only triangles should be used in low poly portraits. The fact is that triangles are always flat. You can always connect three randomly chosen points in a three-dimensional space to produce an object on a flat plane. If the portrait is made out of a four-sided shape, the portrait won’t look as balanced as it is supposed to look.

When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

Adding multiple fills to a particular shape is design that is useful because it makes the design looks more realistic in terms of shapes, light, and shadow. An example would be nature; coloring a forest sounds east because it will have the colors green and brown however, we can’t use the same shade of green for all the trees because the color shades are different based on the light source.

    • Ibrahima Diallo

I agree that triangles are often flat but combining it altogether it can give you more of a dimensional figure

    • Nira Bouzgarrou

Coloring a forest would be super interesting since a forest would have many layers and different shades of colors thus adding depth and texture.

    Question 01 –

Why do you think the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the picture is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

I believe the reason triangles are better for low-poly designs is due to the consistent color pattern that makes it easy to work with. Another reason is that triangles are easy to work with and give an easy effect of light and shadow. making the “shading” pop out more and keeping it consistent. A four-sided shape may cause issues with light and shadow. Because triangles have a more defined edge, they allow for better contrast and look more aesthetically pleasing. A four-sided shape may be possible, but the contrast of light and dark would make it look messy.

    Question 02 –

When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

It is useful, as it creates a sense of light and shadow or a realistic look to what we’re trying to make the shape look like or resemble, for example, an Apple. Adding different fills of the red color to represent the light and shadow, areas of the apple making it realistic or showing the texture of it. Another one is a sliced apple. With fills of different shades of red for the outer skin and a lighter yellowish color for the inside of the apple. These different shades will create an aesthetic look that makes it look realistic.

    • Basema Ikhmayes

I agree having different shades of the same color in a design makes a huge difference in terms of realistic design.

    • Matthew De Souza

I like your example. It’s a clear and helps make the method much more understandable
