What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

Adding layers allows the creator to differentiate between different shapes/objects on separate layers and have an option to quickly select/edit/lock or hide them as needed. Naming the layers also allows having more control and better organization within your file structure. As with our portrait assignment, one can also use a reference file on one layer and create vector art on another without intersecting.

Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

While having the pen tool selected, create the initial anchor point by clicking on the page. Proceed with creating two additional anchor points the same way. Hover the mouse over the original anchor point until you see the circle near the pen icon representing your cursor, then do a single click to close the triangle shape.

    Question 01 –

What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

The value of creating layers in illustrator is that you can work on a project with overlapping objects but they can be separated. When working in Illustrator you might want to use a picture to trace on top of but when you work solely on top of the image you could accidentally select the image while trying to select an object and move the image. In order to avoid this you can put the reference image in a separate layer and lock the layer, then do the drawing on a different layer that way no matter what you do to the objects you won’t move the image. I think it is also very helpful to make layers for specific objects of a group of objects that might overlap each other because then you can lock a layer and work on a group at the time. Something I personally like to do is when I was to try something that I am not sure if I want to keep is that I do it on a different layer that way, I can hide and unhide the layer to see if I want to keep it or not, if I don’t I just delete the layer without damaging the rest of the artwork.

    Question 02 –

Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

When doing a low poly portrait the first thing you need to do is put your reference photo in a separate layer and close it so it doesn’t move by accident. The image being stable is a crucial part given that the triangles should stay in the right place, so now you can create a separate layer by going to layers and selecting the plus sign. In the new layer, you can start to draw your triangles by using the pen tool or pressing P on the keyboard. You can start by putting a point down and trying to shape a triangle and to close it you need to select the same pointing which you started after you did your 3 points of the triangle. You will know that you are closing the triangle because when you put the pen tool back in the point when you started a small circle should appear to let you know that you will close the shape. Now you can click on that point and that will close your triangle. When you close a triangle that allows you to move on and try to do more but if you don’t close it then the pen tool will continue to move and make points when you click and that will make you lose the triangle shape.

Creating layers in Illustrator helps separate the object you’re working on. It’s the same as drawing an illustration. A sketch layer, a linework layer, and a color layer. However, it’s a little different in Illustrator but follows the same process. When working with layers, you can change the object to your liking. If you ever made a mistake, you can always make a another layer and try again as long as you don’t lose your original layer.

To close triangle shapes, use the pen tool or press “p”. You use the pen tool to click on three points to make a triangle. That’s how you make a triangle. However, if you want to overlap the triangle that you made, hold-click one of the triangle point you made and proceed to make another one. Repeat this until you made a complete portrait.

    Question 01 –

What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

Using layers is very important in illustration. Even if we create multiple layers in Illustrator, each separate line that we draw on each layer will be placed on that specific layer. That allows us to handle everything easier. I find that layers are more advanced to manage in illustrator than in photoshop. I haven’t used all the layers features available yet, but I’ve read that we can create layers inside other layers, which means nesting. That allows us to sort of group layers, so it’s easy to work with sub-layers. Also is better to name layers using specific file names as opposed to generic names to help us identify layers easier. That way when an object is selected in the work area, we will see the layer name highlighted inside the layer palette. That shows us that we are working on the object that we selected. We can lock layers and close the visibility of the objects in it, by clicking on the eye icon next to the layer’s filename. When we draw something in our work area, the “add new layer or + ” icon allows us to create a new top layer, where we can drag new objects into.

    Question 02 –

Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait

Once you have finished creating all the paths, even if they are open or closed, we can select all paths, go to window and select pathfinder. Then under the tool palette, click on the ‘divide’ icon. That helps us to combine and separate paths that share the same intersections. Sometimes we may accidentally shift our path by direct selection while trying to adjust one point. I think that we can save a lot of headache that I faced with some of the misaligned paths that I’ve been still trying to close. I realized that when paths are misaligned, triangles will not be formed properly. When a path is well closed, we can select it with ‘A .That will highlight the triangle outline we created and reshape it or realign it.

Interesting comparison between Photoshop and Illustrator. I also mention that earlier too. It really is unique how layers work differently in each program. They all work differently.

    • Nastassia Molicheva

It’s a really interesting point – I didn’t know that creating sub-layers is another way to manage the work within the Illustrator program – excited to try it!

What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

The value of creating layers in illustrator is to have every step of a design in a separate layer. Also, if we want to get rid of a picture we added or a color or a shape we drew we don’t have to start all over we could simply just delete the specific layer we want to delete.

    Question 02 –

Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

In order to close triangle shapes in the self portrait is by holding shit when we start drawing the triangle and connect all the dots together and at end just release the mouse, then we will have a connected triangle.

    • Maribel Royer

I agree with you, Basema on the way you explained how we can close triangles. I also found it very helpful to use p + (-) minus sign to select the pen tool to use the delete anchor point mode. At the same time, if we use plus sign (+) we add new anchor points to a path. Another helpful option is the ‘A” to directly use the select tool, which allows us to adjust anchor points and paths when we need to double click an anchor point to modify anchor points.

Question 01 – What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

Layers help you keep our artwork organized by separating different elements of your design onto different layers. We also could turn on and off different parts of your design, making it easier to focus on specific parts.

Question 02 – Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

To create the triangle shapes in the the self-portrait we  use the pen tool to connect all 3 anchor points first. Then, we hold the shift to add another anchor point on the existing point or else it will remove the point.

    q1)

The value of creating layers in illustrator is that it organizes your work so you can find certain parts of your object easier. To open the layers panel in illustrator, go to the window on top of illustrator’s menu bar and click on layers. You can also press the f7 key to bring up the layers panel faster.

When you add a new layer with the plus icon, its tab shows a different color.

Clicking on the carrot icon within a layer tab shows all the objects or elements that are in a layer.

Double clicking on a layer shows its settings. You can change its color, change the name, dim the objects opacity, show or hide objects, etc. Most of the things I just said can be done on the layer tabs.

You can find the objects you are looking for by pressing the magnifying glass icon on the bottom of the layer panel.

You can lock layers so that you don’t accidently mess around with parts of a project.

    q2)

To close a triangle shape in a self portrait  in illustrator, use the pen tool to connect all 3 anchor points. The pen tool is located on the toolbox on the left in illustrator. A faster way to get the pen tool is to press the p key. Once you connect the last line to the anchor point, the pen will not show a line outline. This shows that the pen tool completed its job of closing the shape. To see that If you close the object, hover over the object with the selection tool (v key) or the direct selection tool (a key). To not accidentally delete an anchor point when creating a new triangle next to an old one, hold the shift key when clicking on an anchor point.

    • Irin Yela

Yes, I totally agree with you. We use it to organizes our work by separating different parts so we can find the objects easier.

    Question 1)

It is advantageous to use layers because they allow you to change, manipulate, and create new artwork on top of the original image without affecting it. You have the ability to concentrate on specific components within a layer without affecting anything besides the particular artwork being examined.

    Question 2)

Start by positioning three anchor points that form a triangle using the pen tool (shortcut p) to create a triangle. The triangle will be completely enclosed once you’ve finished that step because all three anchor points will be connected to the triangle object. Simply click and hold on any of the anchor points while releasing the shift key to make a new triangle using one of the sides of the existing triangle. After clicking, the line can be moved in any direction and a new triangle can be made by connecting the anchor points. You can repeat the process to get distinct triangles that only relate to that particular set of anchor points.

    • Jeffrey Lin

For question 1, I like that you said that layers don’t affect the original image. You offer a better explanation than me for connecting and closing triangles in question 2.

    1. Layers let you arrange your artwork into logical groups, which makes it easier to explore and update your design. You may name each layer and group related things together to help you keep your design organized and discover specific pieces while making modifications. Layers also enable you to focus on specific aspects of your design without influencing the rest of the artwork. On a given layer, you may apply effects, change colors, or delete objects without impacting the other levels. Layers can be handy for expressing changes or modifications while working with other designers or clients. Layers may be turned on and off to display different design alternatives, making it easier for others to grasp your work and provide feedback.
    2. First, choose the Pen tool from the toolbar on the left side of the screen to get started. Choose the starting point for your triangular form by clicking there. In the next point, where you want the triangle to end, click to draw a straight line. The third point of your triangle, which will be on the artboard, should now be where you move the Pen tool. Click here to draw another straight line. Return your cursor to the beginning position and click one more to close the triangle. The triangle’s form will now be complete. If desired, repeat these procedures to add more triangle shapes to your self-portrait.
  10. Delia Gil-Galvez

The value of creating layers in illustrator is that it allows you to create, move, and alter different objects without disturbing the other layers. It makes it easier to change certain things or delete certain things without having to disturb the whole design piece. Having layers also helps keep your project more organized and structured.

To close triangle shapes in the self-portrait, you first need to grab the pen tool and create three anchor points making sure that the last point connects with the first one. These three points should close and create a triangle.

    • Matthew De Souza

Short and simply to the point. The using layers is just necessary when working on artwork. Even when it comes to using other adobe software like indesign and photoshop, layers can hold your work together and keep you organized.

Question 01 – What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

Creating layers help you keep track of what you’re doing. It also helps to change or delete something without changing the entire design or losing big chunks of the designs. If you make a mistake you can change it or delete it from the layer its on without deleting anything unnecessary. To add or create more layers, go to windows – layers then on the bottom of the layer press the button that has a plus sign in the square to create a new later. To work on a layer without making any changes to the other layers, lock the layers you’re not working on.

Question 02 – Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

To close a triangle in the self portrait, use the pen tool (shortcut: “p”) to create your triangle, when closing it, you’re going to click on the point you first placed to start the triangle. There with be a small circle at the bottom right of the pen tool, this is showing you that it’s going to close the triangle when you click onto the point. To create a new triangle that will be touching the previous triangle hold shift while clicking to create the first point for the new triangle, then repeat the process for the self-portrait.

    • Delia Gil-Galvez

I liked how you brought up the small circle that appears on the bottom right of the pen tool that shows when a triangle is going to close. I didn’t know that so I thought that was interesting.

  12. Jenise Roque

    1) Creating layers is good because you are able to alter, distort, and create new artwork on in without messing up the original image. You are able to work on specific things on each layer and not alter anything else besides that one artwork on the layer.

    2) To close a triangle, grab a pen tool and create 3 anchor points and they should close down. To make another triangle next to the anchored triangle, press the shift key next to the anchor point and create another triangle.

    • Ebony Derrick

Your steps are easy to follow and straight forwards. It’ll help beginners understand why they should use layers.

    • Nira Bouzgarrou

I like how easy it is to follow your instructions! I agree with you on the layers, it keeps your work organized as well.

  13. Ibrahima Diallo

The value of layers in Illustrator is very simple. The value is that you get an opportunity to transform the layer which doesn’t affect the next layer of object. For an example you can have two of the same objects or anything as layers, you can tweak the other layer/object while keeping the first one in check which can make it more unique. To close a triangle in illustrator is acquiring the pen tool which you can do by pressing P then connect each fragments till its three. Press esc so the lines can connect and be together

    • Blany Gil Reyes

Indeed, this is the magic of layers: allowing us to tweak the object in a separate layer and go back to the original to start again in case of a mistake truly saves a lot of time.

    • Basema Ikhmayes

Transforming a layer without affecting the next one is very important.

    Question 01 –

What is the value of creating layers in Illustrator?

Creating layers allows one to be able to distort, destroy, and modify the current image or object. If a mistake is made, one is able to switch layers or delete them, and the original layer will still be there. Hence why layers are extremely important as they can save hours of work if you want to create a layer or multiple layers. It can be done in Illustrator by pressing windows>layers>plus sign bottom right corner to create a new layer. You can lock/drag up and down, and that’s how you make a layer in Illustrator and how important they are.

    Question 02 –

Describe how to close triangle shapes in the self-portrait.

In order to close a “triangle,” first you will need to use the pen tool (shortcut p) and then place three anchor points that make a triangle. Once you do that, the triangle will be closed since the 3 anchor points are connected to that specific triangle object. Now if you want to create another triangle with a side of the triangles, you will need to hold-click any of the anchor points and let go of the shift key. Once you have clicked, you can move the line in any direction and make another triangle by closing the anchor points. If you repeat the process, you will have individual triangles that belong only to that set of anchor points.

    • Ibrahima Diallo

I like how simple you made it to address the layers in illustrator

    • Jenise Roque

I agree with everything you said. Pressing the shift key really helps a lot.

    • Nira Bouzgarrou

I like how you specified that you can save hours of work by creating a layer or multiple layers. Agree with you on that note.
