The value of the shape builder tools is to help “build up shapes”, a better way to approach this is if you have 5 different circles and want to create a cloud. This is where you would use the shape builder tool, you would use it and then “merge” them, although this merging is a little different from the pathfinder merging. With the shape builder, you can both merge and remove some pieces, let’s say you have a little piece from the fifth circle that you don’t like, with this tool you can remove it to create your ideal cloud.

As mentioned before you can not only emerge the shapes, you can remove some particular parts that you want. You can achieve this when using the alt or option key by clicking on the piece that you want to be deleted.

The Shapes Builder  is a useful tool which allows you to create shapes, patterns, and more. Therefore, combine and delete parts of a shape. It works much similar to the pathfinder tool, I would say. In order to use the shape builder you will need to select two shapes that are intersected. You will then be able to combine the shapes by dragging. To delete you will need to hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and by clicking or dragging it will delete parts of a shape.

Hi guys, 1. We can use a Shape Builder Tool to eliminate areas we don’t want. To be more details, I’d say two or more shapes have to be overlapping, and we just select them with the shape builder tool. By holding the Alt key, the mouse changes to have a minus sign next to it, and then, we are clicking on parts we don’t want delete them. If you would like those shapes to combine, you simply click and drag on all of them to connect them with the shape builder tool. I’m not sure, the shortcut key for that is Cmd+M on Mac and Ctrl+M on Windows.

2.I want to add shapes I can click and draw the crosshair shape I made and then through them without holding any modifier keys and that’s going to add those shapes together. Vice versa, subtracting shapes I can cut off the bottom by selecting all shift m and holding alt or option to subtract all of them. I think it is a better tool than Pathfinder tool
