Masks in Photoshop are important tools that let you edit images without permanently deleting anything. When you create a mask, you are hiding or showing parts of a layer, but the original pixels are still there. This means you can always change your mind later, which is really helpful when you need to make adjustments or fix something. There are many reasons to use masks in your projects. One common use is when you want to combine multiple photos together. For example, if you are making a poster and need to put a person on a different background, a layer mask lets you hide the old background without actually erasing it. You can always go back and fix the edges if needed. Masks are also great for making adjustments to only certain parts of an image. Maybe you want to make someone’s face brighter in a photo without changing the rest of the picture. Or perhaps you want to change the color of just the sky in a landscape photo. Masks give you the control to edit specific areas while leaving everything else alone, which makes them very useful for all kinds of editing projects.
The great thing about working with masks is that fixing mistakes is very easy. If you accidentally hide part of your image that you wanted to keep, or if you show an area that you meant to hide, you can simply switch your brush color to fix it. Masks work with black and white colors. Black hides parts of the image and white shows parts of the image. So if you painted with black and hid too much, just switch to white and paint over the mistake. This will make those areas visible again. If you painted with white and showed too much, switch to black and paint over those areas to hide them. You can press the X key on your keyboard to quickly switch between black and white. There are other ways to fix mistakes too. You can change how strong your brush is by adjusting the opacity setting. You can also use the undo button Cmdz to go back to before you made the mistake. If you mess up a large area, you can select that part of the mask and fill it with black or white to start over in just that spot.
