Textile Lab Directorship

After 5 years of planning, in Spring 2023 I opened the Fashion program’s Textile Lab, and serve as Founder and Director of the Lab. The Lab is comprised of two adjacent rooms on the top floor of the Namm building with large windows overlooking Downtown, just a few blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge. See below for list of equipment and capacity of each room.

Responsibilities As Lab Director, I am responsible for the following:

  • Interviewing and hiring adjunct faculty to teach in the Textiles specialization of the Fashion program
  • Hiring and overseeing the College Laboratory Technician (CLT)
  • Working in tandem with the CLT to safeguard all equipment in the Lab
  • Researching and applying for internal [CUNY] grants to support purchase of Lab equipment and supplies
  • Researching and applying for external grants to support purchase of Lab equipment and supplies
  • Researching new technology, materials and techniques
  • Promoting and displaying student work completed in Textiles courses
  • Reviewing applications from Students and Faculty for Lab use
  • Reporting on the number of students using the Lab
  • Working with Faculty in other departments to develop interdisciplinary projects

Weaving/Digital lab: N-1121 is a large open space that houses the weaving and spinning equipment, along with advanced stitching machines including sergers and embroidery machines. Capacity: up to 18 participants.

Sewing/Dyeing/Print lab: N-1122 includes a sewing studio with computerized sewing machines and sergers, worktables for printing, and a dye kitchen with 3 stainless steel sinks with sprayer faucets. Capacity: up to 18 participants.

  • 18 Brother Computerized Sewing machines
  • 18 Babylock Vibrant sergers
  • 1 Juki Industrial sewing machine
  • 1 male and 3 female dress forms

  • Dye kitchen with 3 sinks and sprayers
  • 4 Padded print tables for silkscreen, block printing  or pattern cutting (4’ x 8’ each)
  • Washer and dryer with 3.0 cubic ft. capacity
  • 6 Induction burners for hot water dyes
  • 12 Stainless steel pots for dyeing (8 quart and 12 quart capacity)
