The History and Evolution of the Playstation Logo
The playstation has been a prevalent and popular gaming console for many years now, from the birth of the playstation gaming console which was launched December 3rd, 1994 in Japan and later brought to North America in September of 1995, up until today with the Playstation 4 pro being the latest gaming console in the series of playstation units. The Playstation is owned by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc it is also marketed as well as manufactured by Sony and has impacted the gaming industry by being one of the largest and most successful global brands to grace the gaming industry since 1994. Sony’s original marketing plan was targeted towards an older gaming audience as opposed to a younger gaming audience. Furthermore like Japan and North America, Europe partook in the glory of the Playstation gaming console and decided to make the Playstation their gaming console of choice.
The Playstation logo is certainly one of the most recognizable and popular logos today because of its thriving and successful career. Following each release of a newer console, the playstation’s logo was altered and updated with each and every release of a newer gaming console. The Playstation sold over 100 million consoles, following its predecessor the Playstation 2 was released in the year 2000 and sold over 155 million consoles and is known for being the most successful of its counterparts in terms of consoles sold. The playstation 3 was released in 2006 and sold 80 million consoles, and the playstation 4 being the fastest selling console in history sold over one million consoles in just 24 hours.
The Playstation also launched a series of handheld gaming consoles which include the PSP (playstation portable), as well as the recent PS Vita. Playstations logo has for the most part stayed synonymous, the initial logo included 4 different colors which were red, yellow, blue and green which symbolized brilliance, passion, charm, joy, and elegance. Today the playstation logo is mostly seen with a black and white appearance. The typeface was designed by a Japanese graphic artist named Manabu Sakamoto, the type for the Playstation logo include a P and S.
