Mr. JS is a 37-year-old healthy Hispanic male that does not take any medication. Occasionally smokes two packs of cigarettes/week.
Vitals: BP: 115/62 P:76 ASA II due to smoking.
The patient presented w/ 28 teeth and some restorations (fillings on #18/#19 and a sealant on #31). Some 5-6mm pockets on some mandibular molars and generalized recession with localized BOP were observed upon a periodontal examination.
FMS exposed showed 15%-33% horizontal RBL on some anterior/posterior teeth. The patient was classified as Stage II Grade B due to radiographic bone loss and several 2-3mm recessions.
The patient’s treatment was scheduled for two appts and was classified as a medium with generalized staining. Quadrants 2 and 3 were scaled during the first visit. Quadrants 1 and 4 were scaled during the second visit, and Arestin was placed on 17DL, 19DB, and 19MB. The patient was given the following instructions after treatment:
- Do not touch the treated area for a week
- Do not eat hard, crunchy, or sticky food.
- Do not floss or use other interdental aids for at least ten days in the area treated with Arestin.
- Begin gentle brushing in the treated area 24 hours after treatment
- Come back for re-evaluation after eight weeks
OHI was focused on showing the patient how to use the Modifies Bass Method correctly. Finally, the patient’s teeth were engine polished with a coarse paste to remove all staining, and a fluoride varnish of 5% was applied.
After 8weeks, the patient came back for the evaluation of the Arestin sites.
