C. H. Greenblatt

Growing up during the 2000’s there was a splurge of animation content on TV. Never noticing who worked on the nostalgic shows I grew up watching. Shows such as The Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Chowder, and Fishhooks to name a few. His name is Carl Harvey Greenblatt.  Born on June 17, 1972, in Plano TX Greenblatt is an American animator, illustrator, producer, and director. He is known for his work on Cartoon Network. Nickelodeon, and even Disney!

Greenblatt began drawing ever since he was a kid. Greenblatt first started off in illustration by creating his own comic strip called, “Zibbler”. His inspiration in drawing came from Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, and Richard Carry as stated in an arts and culture article. His comic was the start of his passion for cartoon and comics. Greenblatt attended the University of Texas at Austin where he majored in advertising. After college drew comics for ads and magazines. However, this changed after a few years when web comics started to become more popular, he became more interested in pursuing animation.

Greenblatt’s funny and quirky work would be recognized in late 1999 by the late Stephen Hilgenberg. The creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. Hilgenberg gave his first job in animation. Greenblatt started as a storyboard artist in the show SpongeBob SquarePants. As he got more experience it would lead him to work on a show on Cartoon Network called, “The Adventures of Billy and Mandy” created in 2001 by Maxwell Adams. According to a Wikipedia article on the show, it revolves around an idiotic boy being best friends with a cold-hearted girl along with a grim reaper who is permanently stuck with because of a game the children cheated in. Now the reaper must deal with them and usually uses his power abilities to take these kids on adventures with interacting with “other worldly environments”.  After working on this show Greenblatt would later make his series on the same network called, “Chowder” in 2007. This show is about a chowder dreaming of becoming a chef, he’s mentored by the famous chef Mung Dall. While being mentored they are always getting themselves in humorous adventures. However, the show unfortunately got cancelled due to the network feeling that the new demographic of boys wasn’t interested in these types of shows.

Greenblatt is currently working at Warner Brother studios. According to an IMBD article of the director he is an executive producer in a current show called Jellystone. Aired on HBO max in 2021 the series is based off Yogi the bear and his other friends turning normal activates into wild adventure.

Greenblatt has illustrated so many nostalgic shows that have made up my childhood and others alike humorous. His work has proven that any age can watch a quirky yet simple show and will never be outdated. Nothing will top what shows had from the early 2000’s thanks to Greenblatt.
