Case Study 02

The first step I would take when I approach this case is to find out as much information I possibly can from the South Carolina Department of Buildings. All prior history, modifications, violations, and job filings are important to know. Then I would look for the certificate of occupancy and the permissible use for the building or just the specific area of the building.  I’ve concluded that the collapse was due to structural failure caused by the fraternity event. This specific area of the building was only constructed with the intention of it being a meeting room which requires light movement and stationary furniture. However, at the fraternity event 30 people dancing at the same time places a greater load on the floor which it was not designed to carry. It is the owner’s responsibility to enforce the occupant load and restrict the area to the use it was designed to accommodate.

Case Study 01

I believe that the architect should report this activity to the D.O.B. As a licensed architect you will be held accountable for this issue. The superintendent of the construction should have been using the right amount of cement and is to be reported because this work goes against building codes. The architect should not sign the contractor’s requisition because this work is unacceptable.

The architect should also check if the contractor is licensed under the state laws. If the individual is not licensed this should also be reported to ensure public safety. Since the contract has been broken between owner, contractor, and architect new changes must be made before the work can be considered acceptable and a new contract must be made between all parties.

My Dream Career

My dream career centers around an elective course I recently studied. My discovery of sustainability made me rethink the career I wanted to participate in. While taking this sustainability course I learned about new possibilities that I could potentially experience. Sustainability in architecture is something that I am still learning and would like to continue studying post-graduation. I would also like to apply sustainability in my remaining design courses.

Being in New York City proves to have its many benefits such as the implementation of innovative technology that can be used to create sustainable buildings. Not only do I want to learn and apply this knowledge; I also want to teach it to the next generation. Stressing the importance of this information will continue to positively impact our world. It would be interesting to meet new people related to this field that can talk about their own experiences.

I like to keep my options open so I am able to learn and try new things. This is what builds experience and will help to know whether I truly enjoy something or not.  I find that I like many aspects of sustainability in architecture but I would not limit myself to just learning about this topic.
