Dream Job

Picking a position in architecture for me is a very broad topic because as mentioned in the article by Archdaily completing a degree is an obstacle and moving further it will pay off in different ways. When I first started to learn anything about architecture, I didn’t really know much about it because I mainly focused on Illustration art or graphic design topics before. Furthermore, once I got into the architecture field and started to connect with people I started to think of what positioned I envision myself in. So, to answer the question I would see myself focusing on Urban Planning or Urban Design because the work in architecture I’ve seen in Landscape Architecture has caught my attention. Plus, sustainably is important to me in my opinion because it seems that developing green spaces or incorporating nature into a translated form of architecture that can possibly shape the years ahead is becoming something more significant for society. The building industry is big with many branched out connection careers but for me Urban Planning is one of the things I see myself working as.

In Urban Planning I also intend to get my master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, so I could learn more about this area/field. Now I won’t leave out my fabrication background because it will be a waste, so I want to work as a side or a main position job in anything involving fabrication in the architectural field. This involves CNC milling with wood, Material testing for a firm project, fabricating custom furniture, etc. I enjoy fabricating since there is a lot of engaging taking place when working with people or literally working with materials. In my opinion I would like a position in a firm to work as a fabricating or model making position because I feel like you can step away from the digital space (AutoCAD, Revit and Rhino) and engage more of the hands-on activities in architecture which I enjoy. So overall, I’m trying to build my experiences in architecture in Urban Planning or Fabrication to potentially work in a firm which is my future goal.

My academic career in architecture has opened my eyes to different societal norms, concepts of beauty and has helped me shape my own creative perspective. Having to integrate creativity with practicality is fun for me. It continuously encourages me to break away from what I am accustomed to and forces me to adapt to new methods of creating. This includes the scales in which we work, whether it is in the master planning of a neighborhood or what control layers should be used in a wall assembly. I appreciate that architecture lives very far from being conditioned to a certain way of thinking. This is important to me, not only academically in relation to critical thinking and problem solving, but in my every day life. This notion of thinking doesn’t shut off once class is over, it follows me into the outside world and changes how I experience my social environment.

All artists reflect their experience, emotions, and perspective through their work. Submerging myself into yet another unfamiliar grey area of learning, I hope to continue my education after gaining two years of professional experience in the field of architecture. The most important take away from my “dream job” is to keep growing, enriching and enhancing my internal resources upon which I can draw from in the future. Pursuing these personal goals are vital to my development as an aspiring architect and will encourage me in refining my craft.

When I was in middle school , I was often asked what I wanted to become when I get older. My response to that question will always be ” I want to become an  Architect and be able to design and build my own house”. Attending NYCCT ,I didn’t  have any background knowledge on architecture or the  different programs they used. My first two semesters were really hard because I wasn’t sure if Architecture  was the right major for me. With the help of professor and classmates I was able to learn the different software, and began to get more interested in  Architecture.  This four years , I’ve learned with a Architecture degree they are many different careers that you can purse.  With this said ,whats my next move ?

After I graduate I want to start focusing more in becoming a landscape architect. I want to be able to create and design outdoor landscapes, and public areas  were people can interact and come together.  I will also  like to get an internship  in a small firm because it will allow me to learn more than a larger firm , and get the the feel of how an Architecture firm  really works. My end goal now  is to work in a firm and be part of projects that will get built, and be able to say that I was part of it.My future goal is to be able to design and build my own house.

When I was young; I never thought I would get into architecture. The choices I planned for myself were police, military, or accounting but from my parents; they wanted me to be a doctor. It was senior year of high school that I knew that majoring in accounting was something I really want in my future but something more hands on instead which brought me to architecture. There was times where I thought that architecture wasn’t for me during college even though for the first time, I actually tried my hardest in something and enjoyed it. I have a huge future planned for myself since I want to work hard now and play later. The things I learn at NYCCT help me think differently in many aspects like the world and my future goals.

My future plan is going for Masters in Architecture in a year then possible coming back to New York City College of Technology for construction management. I was also thinking about minoring in business whether it is during my construction management year or while I am working and not going to school anymore since I also want to get into real estate development and open up my own firm. Later as I get older and get my architecture license, I actually want to come back to teach students since it is also another way of learning new things. I love designing in all aspect even the technical part but even though I live in New York City all the time; I prefer residential house rather than skyscrapers. The architecture style I see myself during is like a mix of modern and traditional Japanese architecture whether it is for skyscrapers or houses. I want all my designs to be sustainability as well as LEED which will help with a greener planet as well as; push the world to new and innovative technology which continues to change and advance each day that passes.

Dream Job

Growing up in a family that has a lot of background in different fields, Architecture has caught my attention the most. I have family that does Electrical, Hvac, carpentry, plumbing, and elevator mechanics. My dad has successfully learned and is able to understand the basics in all these different trades, which has slowly been passed down to me through the years. Having watched my dad build and remodel houses or even work on our home I started becoming more interested in how he is doing it. The more I became curious in High school the more I wanted to learn when I got to college which is why I started architecture and it has taught me a lot.

For my dream job I would love to be either a construction manager or a project manager. When I first started college I was set on graduating and being a designer with my own firm, but the more I grew and learned about the field, I learned that becoming an R.A. is not everything. I decided to look into other options in the same trade and I found out about construction management. Construction Management is my dream job by being able to run jobs and eventually own my own construction company. Having a Architecture degree will help me in the future goal by giving me a strong understanding of what is needed to have a successful structure. By understanding the basics of everyone’s jobs i would be able to communicate and come up with solutions that will make the projects more efficient and save money. I can use my experience and education to help out in whatever way I can to make the projects easier for everyone. Owning my own construction company in NYC is the goal and I will strive to learn as much as I can in every field as my dad did and be able to run my company confident.

As a child, my bedroom floor was filled with Legos and blocks. All I needed was a box of Legos and my imagination to be entertained for hours. I knew at a young age that my dream was to become an architect. I have learned a lot in my time at New York City College of Technology. This includes the computer programs used in the architectural field as well as what makes for a “good” design. Before college, I concentrated only on the aesthetic of a building. Now I understand that architecture is about the experience through the structure as well as the aesthetics.

My dream job is to be an architect focused on designing and detailing. I want to help design the overall project and then focus on the smaller aspects of the project. I enjoy understanding how things are put together in the real world. I would like to work in an architecture firm where I can learn, grow, and collaborate with others. I want to work in a firm with a creative and friendly culture in Brooklyn or Manhattan. I want to gain experience in the architectural industry. I want to learn both the architectural side of the firm as well as the business side. Eventually, I want to become a licensed architect and open up my own architectural firm.

Dream Job-Kevin Carrillo

Since I was young, I’ve always been interested in the design & construction field. I always enjoyed watching how different elements were brought together to form massive structures. In my head, I would always look up at those tall buildings and think to myself that one day I would design such structure. I was always interested on the hands-on design projects in high school, but they were more focused on the engineering aspect. However, I was always interested in the design process. I liked the idea of starting something from scratch and build on from it to complete a finished product. Here at NYCCT I learned that architecture is more than focusing on the beauty aspect of a facade. I’ve learned that architecture means to take into consideration various different aspects of a site and fully develop it to generally solve a problem. I enjoy studying Architecture as it not only allows us to learn from past world history and design methods, but to also push towards new and innovative technology that is beneficial to our planet (green /LEED) designs, while at the same solving problems that will benefit people.

As for my dream job, I would like to first continue my education after completing my bachelor’s degree and work towards my Master’s degree in one of the following: Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture,  or possibly in the Construction Management-related field. As for work; I’d currently like to get an internship or part time/full time job at a small firm as this will allow me to learn more about the procedures taken in the AEC field. Although, it could be more work compared to a larger firm, I would like to get basic knowledge of different type work done in an actual architectural project to fully understand every step from beginning to end. eventually, I would like to work for a bigger firm and possibly work on projects all over the world. I would like to gain as much experience possible and in the future take the ARE and hopefully become a Registered Architect someday. Maybe someday open my own firm, but there is a vast amount of work to be done; therefore I’m working on learning as much as I can now in the present to eventually make everything easier in the future!

Assignment # 1: Dream job

In the building industry Architects often times provoke different reactions through their designs. By using their creativity they develop aesthetics of spaces along with the functionality of a building. Nowadays Architects are slowly losing control on their ability to lead the direction of projects  in the urban environment. As the building industry puts a lot of restriction on Architects when working on projects with clients, contractors and subcontractors. It is also common knowledge that the net value of architectural services in projects are value at a very small percentage, which puts architects near the bottom of the financial structure in the AEC industry. This is one of the reasons I aspire to become a ‘Architect as Developer’ which is a new practice that is emerging. Which allows architects to have the ability to become the owner, by eliminating the client and the general contractor from the design and building process. Therefore the Architect is able to take full control of the project and have more freedom. This allow the architect to create better city environments for the community as well as achieve substantial financial compensation. This dream job also motivates you to learn new skills like understanding project analysis, construction techniques, acquiring building permits and controlling budgets. This is also a reason why I am interested in doing construction management which will help me acquire a lot more experience in the field. This job carries a lot of responsibility and understanding of the building industry that when also incorporating the design aspect it creates more areas for development potential for the people in the communities.

Dream Job – By Taylor Hernandez

As a little girl, I always had a passion for drawing and creating. At the time my uncle was an engineer and my dad was a kitchen designer and installer. At the age of nine years old my grandma wanted to building a house and to do that she went to an architect in the local area. During the times she would go, I would always be sure to go with her and pay attention to what the architect would be talking about. After the few times I went, thats when I realized I knew what I wanted to do as my career.

My dream career in the future was to be come an architect who is highly respected by many people and gets the job done correct. As of today I am a student in City Tech College and is currently in the field of studying architecture. I am in my fourth year and is almost done with my degree requirements. Being in this field of study, I have learned so much and I am able to apply the information I learned to the working world. I have interned in an architecture office before and it is very interesting what goes on. As for the few months of being there, I have learned so much. One thing I have noticed is that being able to actually work in the field and going to school learning the materials and skills is very different from each other.

I definitely feel that I have learned more being in the actual field it self with guidance of architects I was working with rather than what is taught in school. Overall I really enjoy being in this field. It is very interesting and I am able to brainstorm, draw out my ideas and really get creative with designing. Even though there is so much work to do in this field, it is extremely worth all the stress. Once you complete the job you end up feeling proud of the work you did. A quote that I heard a lot and has stuck to me was, “As an architect you design for the present with an awareness of the past for a future which is essentially unknown. – Norman Foster”
