Case 54: Fire Protection Head

Case 54: Fire Protection Head

This case starts at the substantial completion part of a three-story build-to-suit office building project. The situation is that the building completed many city inspections and has achieved a certificate of occupancy (C of O) that is obtained on time. But the only problem is that the fire protection and life safety inspections remain, and the sub-contractor has placed the wrong sprinkler head throughout each of the three floors, but the function of the sprinkler head is perfectly fine. So, in this case we concluded that the general contractor (GC) who oversees checking up on his sub-contractor takes the fall for this mistake. Plus, due to the timing of this scenery there is no point in changing the sprinkler head if it is an aesthetic problem since there is clearly no problem with the function and it will pass inspection. The GC should have been paying close attention to the assembly of this part of fire protection sprinkler head but it comes down to a lack of supervision by the General Contractor to the sub-contractor for not asking ahead to an Architect or Engineer for a detail on this problem and noticing a little earlier.

Case Study 24

Case 24: Budget or Bid

During a career of an architect you’re bound to face problems between the owner, contractor and architect. This case study to keep things brief is about just that involving a situation in which the owner refuses to pay more to the contractor due to the owner not becoming aware of some information. In my opinion this case was interesting because this can actually happen to owners. Now somethings that went wrong to lead up to this conflict was for one the owner had a lack of experience when talking to the contractor in which some cases the owner would keep the architect by their side to help out with problems like this. In addition, there was miscommunication of information in that the contractor and owner should document this verbal talks as an example of email, etc. Also since this was an estimated budget construction the owner should always be aware that costs and time will make prices increase in the end. Throughout the case communication, documentation and lack of experience between the owner and contractor to make sure this doesn’t happen in a project.

Architect? Yes or No

Architect? Yes or No?

Thinking about becoming a licensed architect is a great question and something I’ve pondered on for a while. In the path I’m heading I want to become a licensed architect because it brings on a responsibility and commitment in the career of architecture that one experiences prior this achievement. Plus, I would want to possibly work on my own projects or even be able to sign those drawings off with my own signature, making architecture feel more serial. Becoming a licensed architect will tell my employer that I have the experience to take on huge future responsibilities. In my opinion having my license will give me the opportunity to express my designs through the forms I make or even the architectural language I establish around a community. Everyone has a unique style to architecture, so why not make it become real. Architect? Yes.

Dream Job

Picking a position in architecture for me is a very broad topic because as mentioned in the article by Archdaily completing a degree is an obstacle and moving further it will pay off in different ways. When I first started to learn anything about architecture, I didn’t really know much about it because I mainly focused on Illustration art or graphic design topics before. Furthermore, once I got into the architecture field and started to connect with people I started to think of what positioned I envision myself in. So, to answer the question I would see myself focusing on Urban Planning or Urban Design because the work in architecture I’ve seen in Landscape Architecture has caught my attention. Plus, sustainably is important to me in my opinion because it seems that developing green spaces or incorporating nature into a translated form of architecture that can possibly shape the years ahead is becoming something more significant for society. The building industry is big with many branched out connection careers but for me Urban Planning is one of the things I see myself working as.

In Urban Planning I also intend to get my master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, so I could learn more about this area/field. Now I won’t leave out my fabrication background because it will be a waste, so I want to work as a side or a main position job in anything involving fabrication in the architectural field. This involves CNC milling with wood, Material testing for a firm project, fabricating custom furniture, etc. I enjoy fabricating since there is a lot of engaging taking place when working with people or literally working with materials. In my opinion I would like a position in a firm to work as a fabricating or model making position because I feel like you can step away from the digital space (AutoCAD, Revit and Rhino) and engage more of the hands-on activities in architecture which I enjoy. So overall, I’m trying to build my experiences in architecture in Urban Planning or Fabrication to potentially work in a firm which is my future goal.
