Case Study 54: Fire Protection Heads

Some of the issues that I encounter while reading case 54, was  that the subcontractor had put different sprinkle heads  on every floor. The Contractor didn’t specify  what kind of sprinkler head was needed during the installation. When the owner came to inspect , he wasn’t satisfy that the sprinkler heads were different in every floor . In my point of view I think that the contractor has the fault for not specify to the subcontractor in the beginning of the project ,on what type of sprinkler head was needed. The contractor is responsible for checking the shop drawings and submittals. If they choose to change it , the contractor will have to pay for the expenses.

Case Study #26

While reading the case 26: Historic Restoration, I encounter a lot of problems. The first problem is  bringing a child to your meetings with clients . I personally believe this is unprofessional , It clearly shows that you don’t take your job seriously. Bringing your child creates a distraction when your with your client. The second problem is  having the architect recommend contractors with no documented resume or any type of brochure  that shows he is qualified for the job. It’s really important to have  proof of resume and  previous work completed. It will help contractors attract more clients in the future. The third problem is there are no  drawings or specification to what the owner specifically needs. Some of the terms used in the case are “if needed”, “as necessary” ” if requested by owner”. If you are not specific to what you need done ,then the restoration job will not be completed as you wish. The last problem found in this case is that the budget figures are estimated, the contractor didn’t take his time to ask supplier for a exact cost. It also says that neither the contractor and the owner signed the revised budget, to top it off , the revised budget wasn’t attached to the contract. In the end, this can cause a huge legal issue  between both parties. Contractors should always find out the exact cost from suppliers because you want to meet the owners budget.

Architecture license Yes or No

As of now , I do want to become a license Architect. I want to be able to have my own firm and  design my own drawings when it comes to working with clients. I feel like Architecture is a competitive career and by becoming a license architect , it will open more doors for me  when applying for jobs or when starting my own firm. I will also like to learned the construction  side within this career. I am the type of person that likes learning how everything is put together from drawing on a piece of paper to on -site work .The reason why there is a small doubt in my answer is because what if, while I am working on my hours towards my license I find something that interest me and will led me in a different path inside this field that doesn’t require a license. Who knows, but my main focus now is working towards my license.

Dream job

When I was in middle school , I was often asked what I wanted to become when I get older. My response to that question will always be ” I want to become an  Architect and be able to design and build my own house”. Attending NYCCT ,I didn’t  have any background knowledge on architecture or the  different programs they used. My first two semesters were really hard because I wasn’t sure if Architecture  was the right major for me. With the help of professor and classmates I was able to learn the different software, and began to get more interested in  Architecture.  This four years , I’ve learned with a Architecture degree they are many different careers that you can purse.  With this said ,whats my next move ?

After I graduate I want to start focusing more in becoming a landscape architect. I want to be able to create and design outdoor landscapes, and public areas  were people can interact and come together.  I will also  like to get an internship  in a small firm because it will allow me to learn more than a larger firm , and get the the feel of how an Architecture firm  really works. My end goal now  is to work in a firm and be part of projects that will get built, and be able to say that I was part of it.My future goal is to be able to design and build my own house.
