An unpopular answer here would be peace. The murders, the beatings, the separation of families everything that had to do with the Witch Trials of Salem is one element that eventually created something new. Another element is the fatigue of the townspeople. Everybody was fed up because for so long their loved ones were being jailed and killed for something that did not exist. The Witch Trials became normal. and that element previously mentioned when put together made peace because eventually the hype died out and the trials stopped. Although peace is a God-given right it was something new that the people of Salem haven’t experienced in a while.

This definition of the crucible, can be applied to Arthur Miller’s play because it was based on one personal situation that escalated, which created a chaotic outcome for innocent villagers. When John ended his affair with Abigail, she used the idea of witchcraft in which the town was already convinced of. Roaming around is the presence of “devil worshipers” within a small minded, and a Christian town. However, many people in the town were brainwashed into believing something so absurd, such as witches. So, villagers used their assumptions to put other innocent people in trial. This was to Abigail’s advantage because she was able to convince Elizabeth (who is John’s wife) to be put on trial and sentenced for witchcraft.

One of the definitions for “Crucible” is “a situation in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of “something new”. The way this definition connects with Arthur Miller’s play and leads to “something new” and horrific is when the people of Salem are convinced that witchcraft is present in the town and almost everyone is guilty of it. The attention then shifts to John Proctor and how he confessed he “known” Abigail, known meaning he had an affair. This leads Abigail into having John’s wife Elizabeth on trial for witchcraft. What leads to the Horrific situation is when John Proctor chooses to die because he couldn’t live with the sin he has committed; his wife not being able to forgive him and, also having such a huge reputation in Salem.

I agree with Venessa’s thoughts about the play. The definition of the “Crucible” can be applied to Arthur Miller’s play because in the play Abigail starts blaming everyone for seeing a witch. For instance, first she blamed Tituba for seeing the witch and she accepts that she saw witchcraft to save her life. But Abigail kept blaming everyone and was putting all families in the witch trials. Abigail was playing this game with everyone because people believed in witchcraft so she blamed Mary and Elizabeth too and put them on the trail as well. But in the end, Proctor confesses everything and died. So, this was created in the play that Abigail see witch behind everyone and starts blaming them to save herself. And this was happening back and forth. People who were blamed for seeing a witch were forced to confess it not they were hanged. Just to save herself, Abigail did this all drama and put everyone on trials and most people died. The situation changed from questioning about witchcraft to forcing them to confess it if not they shall die.

The way the definition of “crucible” was displayed in Arthur Miller’s play by a girl named Abigail, who manipulated the whole town with lies to turn against a group of people she claimed to be practicing witchcraft to save herself. Abigail’s intentions were struct by the end of her affair with a respected farmer and husband, John Proctor. John knew Abigail was stating false accusations and didn’t know whether to accuse her to save everyone else. Throughout the play, villagers were continuously accused of witchcraft, even John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. John was originally seen as a bad husband for having an affair but when he sacrificed his own reputation later in the play to save his wife, he redeemed the good in him.

The definition of ‘crucible’, which is “a situation in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new”, relates to Arthur Miller’s play ‘The Crucible’ because the initial ‘situation’ was that Abigail lied by accusing other girls of witchcraft to protect herself. This caused John Proctor to try to stop Abigail’s lies, which upset her and led her to have John’s wife Elizabeth put on trial as well, which is another element interacting with the initial situation. These two events caused chaos in Salem and made other villagers give forced confessions and accuse others to save themselves, while others chose to stand their ground and were killed. The new creation that came of these events was widespread hysteria and paranoia about others being witches, and fear of being accused.

In order to conceal her affair with Proctor, Abigail lies and accuses everyone of witchcraft. She did not hesitate to physically abuse the other girls and threatened them to go along with her plans. She accuses almost everyone of witchcraft. This is the strategy she utilized to shift the focus away from herself. Declaring witchcraft provided her with status and recognition in Salem. This cruel act definitely gave her power but she looses the game in the end. She had planned everything to acquire Proctor and to eliminate Elizabeth. But the end result just turns out to be the opposite.
