Promoting Pediatric Dental Hygiene Through Interactive Education
Our service activity focused on promoting dental hygiene awareness among young children through an engaging and interactive educational session. We created a powerpoint presentation in which we introduced key oral health concepts in a fun and age-appropriate way. Topics included the importance of brushing teeth for two minutes twice a day, understanding “sugar bugs” as bacteria that cause cavities, the role of flossing, and distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy foods for teeth.
To make the session more impactful, we incorporated a variety of interactive and hands-on activities. Students participated in brushing “sugar bugs” off laminated tooth images, which visually demonstrated how plaque is removed through proper brushing. We also provided coloring books and distributed goodie bags to reward them.
Additionally, we organized a clay modeling activity where children created their own tooth molds. This allowed them to better understand tooth structure and the importance of cleaning hard-to-reach areas, such as gaps between teeth. These hands-on components were intentionally included to move beyond digital learning and give students a more immersive, tactile experience that helped reinforce the concepts being taught.

In this activity, I played an active role in both planning and facilitating the session. I helped present the educational material, guiding students through the slides and explaining concepts like “sugar bugs“, proper brushing techniques, and flossing in a way that was easy for them to understand and relate to.
One of my key contributions was coming up with the idea of the hands-on clay activity. I specifically wanted to incorporate interactive elements because I recognized that learning has become increasingly digital. I believed that younger students benefit more from physically engaging with concepts, as it allows them to better absorb and retain information.
During the activity, I assisted students with creating their clay tooth models. This demonstration made abstract concepts like tooth gaps and plaque buildup more concrete and understandable. I also interacted directly with the children during the brushing activity, reinforcing proper techniques and encouraging participation.
My contribution helped make the event more engaging and effective by ensuring that students were not just passively listening, but actively involved in their learning. As a result, many students were able to clearly understand why brushing and flossing are important, rather than simply being told to do them. The combination of visual, verbal, and hands-on learning created a more memorable and meaningful experience for the participants.
