From the Field

Write about an exhibit, artist, or specific work of art that exemplifies illustration as communications design.

  1. This work is trying to communicate the life of a student in the university. In the graphic design displays the usually struggles college students undergo. The illustration has humor that plays a vital role in which communicates to the people its message. The illustration is different from graphic design because the artist does not follow any patterns or rules when creating his art.  On the other hand, in graphic design an artist has to follow at minimum some pattern or rule in order to develop a design. The typography does not play a major role in the illustration because it was only to reference a college.

Write about an exhibit, artist, or specific work of art that serves as a goof example of illustration as storytelling.

  1. The storytelling illustration is a scene of a guy that after seeing a short film decides he wants to learn how to dance just like the actors. The illustration can be interpreted as any modern time period.  The layout of the scenes has a consecutive sequence that allows anyone to appreciate the illustration with clear understanding.  The text is integrated within the scenes, which serves as a narration in order for the illustration to be understood by the viewers.

After visiting the whole museum, list 3 overarching themes that appear to tie together the works featured here today. Describe each theme by citing specific visual examples across collection, or analyzing the exhibition choices, or even the layout of the museum.

  1. I found 3 themes that appear to be connected on the same wall located by the first set of stairs going towards the first floor. The 3 themes are: satire, perspective, and absurdity.

Satire was displayed by Mary Grandpre in the “The Deer and the Hyena”.  In this illustration shows a creation full of color and life.  At the same time, the Hyena has a full grind and laughing while holding a pocket watch, while the deer and other animals are watching with a concerned looked.  This illustration is mocking the relationship between predator vs prey.  It displays that any given moment time will end for the prey.

Perspective was displayed by Coby Whitmore in “How Long Shall I Wait?.”  The perspective of this illustration focuses on the woman who is sitting smelling a flower is anxious waiting on the other woman who is trying on dress.  On the other hand, the third woman on her knees is anxious to help the woman to find the perfect fit for her dress.  The colors black and lavender in this illustration give a perspective of perfect contrast.

Absurdity was displayed by John C. Berkey in the poster art for the Society of Illustrators Science Fiction Exhibition.  The illustration is absurd because it displays a spaceship that is crossing the universe with many planets surrounding it.   The colors used in the illustration are prefect, but creates an absurd view on what we think outer space may look like.
