MTEC3175 Experimental Game Design

MTEC3175 Experimental Game Design

This hands-on studio course will focus on the creation of innovative workable 2D & 3D prototypes exploring expressive forms of gameplay using a variety of multi-media approaches and methodologies. The class will focus on the prototyping process and the challenge of creating prototypes quickly and effectively to determine whether an idea has legs. As game developers, this is an important skill to harness – as development cycles are too long and expensive. We will also cover a range of topics relating to the aesthetics of game design and creating meaningful game play experiences on a budget.

Together, we will explore and write within new genres, conduct research, and reflect on our writing practices. By the end of this semester, you’ll be able to analyze and participate in genres inside and outside of higher education. The aim is to build skills that will be useful in future coursework, the workplace, and in your personal lives. In other words, this course isn’t self-contained—we’re aiming to give you a toolbox of skills that you can apply to other classes and situations.
