This course introduces students to core concepts in the graphic communications field including typography, color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. During the semester, students will complete three pages of their own ePortfolio web site. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the graphic communications field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.
COMD1100 Fall 2022 Graphic Principles 1
This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through practice, art history and by exposure to the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop skills in two-dimensional design, color mixing, and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching, and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.

This is a beginning course that explores the technical and aesthetic concerns of photography. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software, students will explore fundamental concepts of light, exposure, and composition in order to develop the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging images.
Explore creative visual communication through graphic design. Using type and graphics, students will participate in the process of communicating concepts by experimenting with image-making techniques. Acquire the professional knowledge, language, and processes needed—from initial thumbnail to final presentation—in multiple disciplines such as graphic design, web design, advertising, motion, illustration, broadcast design production, and others.
COMD1162 Raster & Vector, Fall 2022
Basic concepts related to the two fundamental digital graphic forms (raster and vector graphics) and learning best uses and practices for each. This course covers basic digital imaging terminology and techniques including size, resolution, color space, file elements, measurements, file formats, and scanning software and hardware. Class projects require students to explore the meaning of communication through design and how it correlates with client satisfaction and target audience. Students become proficient with both raster and vector applications, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
