COMD 1103 Figure Drawing, D162, FA2017

This advanced drawing course develops visual awareness of the human figure. Students will develop an understanding of the basic forms of the human body, how those forms are connected and move, and how to draw those forms proportionally. Students will also consider how the human form relates to the world around it, developing a clear understanding of how to create a composition containing proportional figures within a space according to perspective. Sensitivity to line, volume, light and shade is explored. Communication designers use the concepts developed in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, illustration, broadcast design, animation and photography.

COMD 2427 Typographic Design III, Fall 2017

This course addresses the advanced creative and comprehensive study of typographic design principles. Exercises include consideration of hierarchy and design with intensive use of body copy to explore multiple columns and grids and multiple page applications, in the design of table, book, poster, web and motion graphics. Lessons include modes of production, font management and electronic file preparation.

COMD2327 – Type II, S2017

Introduces a variety of basic layouts and formats, building technical and practical fluency in setting and working with type for both print and screen. This course further explores topics learned in COMD 1167 Type and Media, such as typeface selection and the use of the typographical grids. Problem-solving for most common typographical problems is discussed. Prerequisite: COMD 1167 Equivalent to old course ADV 1217

ADV1100 Graphic Design Principles I (FA13)

This foundation design and color theory course explores graphic communication from idea development to final execution. Through hands-on experiments, collaborative learning, and individual projects students will learn the language and process of design thinking and gain a solid foundation in design principles and practices. While studying the basic tenets of design students develop visual literacy by following a design process: 1. Research 2. Experimentation 3. Development of Skill, Craft and Voice 4. Expression of Form, Emotions or Concepts 5. Thoughtful Assessment (verbal and written) 6. Record of significant commitment of time Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.
