This course introduces students to the foundational role of databases in Information Systems (IS), with a focus on how structured data is stored, managed, and accessed in modern computing environments. Designed for both technical learners and those new to the field, the course explains the advantages of using databases over traditional file systems, and demystifies the core functions of Database Management Systems (DBMS)—the software that powers and manages databases. Students will focus on relational databases (RDB), learning how data is organized into tables and how integrity is maintained using primary and foreign keys. By the end of the course, students will understand how databases interact with other components of an IS and be prepared to engage with real-world data-driven systems.
