Dr. Shapiro’s ENG 1121 Fall 2020
A course in effective essay writing and basic research techniques including use of the library. Demanding readings assigned for classroom discussion and as a basis for essay writing. The second semester of English composition and expository writing. This class is being taught as if it were actually named “Writing about Language, and Dialect, and Speech Communities.”
Together we will focus on developing language, and academic reading and writing skills. Students will practice reading for comprehension as well as drafting, revising and summarizing skills. They will polish their grammar with a focus on creating academic level complex sentence structure while avoiding sentence fragments and run-ons. Students will work extensively on paragraph and essay organization, and on writing multiple drafts of proofread, edited and reedited essays. They will also learn to read more deeply and with better developed comprehension skills and strategies for improve those skills.
ENG 1101 – English Composition I – 4 hours, 3 credits This is a course in effective essay writing and basic research techniques, including use of the library. Demanding readings are assigned for classroom discussion and as a basis for essay writing. Prerequisites: CUNY certification in reading and writing.

City Tech’s Source for Academic Affairs Information
This is a low-pressure, asynchronous reading group. We don’t certify anyone. We aren’t doing workshops or anything official. This is just a place where we can slowly read and talk about pedagogical approaches. Each semester we’ll pick a book and work through it together. Or not.
