Explore creative visual communication through graphic design. Using type and graphics, students will participate in the process of communicating concepts by experimenting with image-making techniques. Acquire the professional knowledge, language, and processes needed—from initial thumbnail to final presentation—in multiple disciplines such as graphic design, web design, advertising, motion, illustration, broadcast design production, and others.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the graphic communications field including typography, color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. During the semester, students will complete three pages of their own ePortfolio web site. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the graphic communications field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.

This beginning photography course explores the foundational concepts of light and exposure. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software, the student develops compositional skills and the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging photographs.

Foundation course in typography with emphasis on using type for a multiple of industry related applications ranging from print to interactive. COMD1100 Graphic Design Principles 1, Spring 2023

This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop basic skills in two dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.
