Assignment to find fieldwork/study situations of approximately eight hours per week at an internship site approved by the Department Internship instructor such as an advertising agency, graphic design firm, corporate design office, publications art department, photography or illustration studio, TV or multimedia production company. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Openlab. A portion of the class will be devoted to presenting and sharing experiences with classmates. Students will learn how to assess their talents, update their resume, and promote themselves and their work through social networks. Students will be required to setup and maintain at least two social media networks such as: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop basic skills in two-dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the media field including color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates. During the semester, students will complete three pages of their own ePortfolio web site, complete a print design project and one video project. Lectures will provide students with a historical perspective of the media field as well as discussing current practices and future trends.

Design a Swiss style Christmas card

Extra make-up assignment is to design a 10 X 10 Christmas card in the style and tradition of Swiss designer and Pratt Professor Charles Goslin. Professor Goslin, each year designed a subjective holiday self-promotion card. The greeting card was designed in black and white, and sized at 10X10. The assignment is due on the make-up date December 21st. Assignment — Design a self-promotion Christmas card based on Swiss designer Charles Goslin. The card must be based on one of the several cards designed by Mr. Goslin, presented as references. The students must also write a two paragraph paper on defining Swiss Style design (also known as International Style). Assignment specs 1. size: 10X10 2. colors: black and white 3. art: illustrations and clip art. Thumbnail sketches due—12/12, 12/17, and final is due on the last day of class 12/21.
