Mahnoor Sheikh’s Profile

My name is Mahnoor Sheikh, I am of Pakistani descent, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I am the youngest of four children. I am currently eighteen years old, and despite being born to parents who speak fluent Urdu, I never successfully learned how to speak the dialect. I am tolerant and do respect my family’s personal beliefs and culture. There are aspects of my heritage I do find fascinating, I have even integrated into my life the act of abstaining from alcohol and to an extent dressing in modesty. But, I would not describe myself as a Muslim. There are portions within the ideology that I disagree with, specifically the normalization of women being regarded as inferior to men. Many women, to this day, taught to be passive and to “obey”, their husbands, girls growing up in a patriarchy, taught to feel shame when their bodies endure menstruation, a healthy biological result of puberty, and the outrageous punishment/ social ridicule a woman will face if she does rebel. I will never accept this mindset. No gender, religion, sex, race, mental or physical ailments or economic standing distinguishes a person’s value or warrants persecution. I am a firm believer that “all people are created equal”, and there are no exceptions. There is no justification for supremacy, and I will never stop trying to show the world this.
Along with being an atheist and passionate feminist, I am an artist. I love the fine arts and often utilize this love to express my personal appreciation of females, as something contradictory to the ideology I was raised with. Femininity does not equate weakness, or passiveness, and is definitely not shameful. Through a utilization of bold colors, thick heavy lines, and vulvic imagery I portray femininity as I see it. Unapologetically strong, beautiful and most importantly shameless.
