An introduction to art and architecture from ancient to modern times. The art of Western and Eastern cultures is considered. Additional description for this section: This course is designed to get you thinking about art. What is art? How is art produced? What is the function of art? Art is a record of culture and civilization, often it is the sole way we can understand what was meaningful to people separated from us by time, language and technology. Art also helps us understand our own time and culture. This course connects art to past histories, and introduces students to the visual language of art from ancient to modern times, in order to increase the recognition and understanding of references in advertisements and posters, on clothing, and in film and other media. The course introduces a wide variety of methodologies and topics of current debate in the field of art history, including: style, technique, patronage, iconography (subject matter), social context, race, and gender. This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. This is a course in visual literacy and the design process: How we see, how we analyze the effects of our vision, and how we craft a design that will have energy and content. All projects will include thumbnail sketches, discussion and research. A weekly scrapbook will be kept. Media used are paint, paper, ink, pencil, ruler, knife, glue, and digital software for expressing graphic ideas. Numerous critiques will take place throughout the course and students’ active engagement in group discussion will play a vital role in establishing an atmosphere of collaboration and shared learning.

This special topics course offers an interdisciplinary approach to investigating our built environment using a case study focused on a specific place each semester. This course combines physical examination with information research and data collection using methodologies developed in multiple disciplines. Students from a variety of departments engage in on-site exploration and in-depth research of a location in New York City. Faculty from Hospitality Management and Social Sciences will be teaching the course this semester and will thus focus the course material through the lens of psychological/social science and hospitality and tourism.
