Using history, literature, the arts, politics, and sociology, this interdisciplinary course seeks to trace the Africana presence in New York from the 1600s to the present. This localized course will enable students to examine the varied ways in which people of African descent in the Diaspora have helped to shape the complex identity of New York City over time. Readings, films, music, information literacy sources, and local cultural and research institutions will be used to examine topics, such as slavery, resistance, migration, immigration, labor, Civil Rights, popular culture, gender politics, and gentrification.

HUS 4801 provides students with a professionally supervised work experience in a human service agency. On campus weekly classroom seminars assess students’ progress towards learning objectives, explore student’s concerns and professional practice issues. The development of responsible and appropriate problem solving techniques is emphasized. During the semester there is a shift away from direct practice to areas of supervision administration, needs assessment, elementary program evaluation and resource development.

It includes an introduction to the assessment of multiple vulnerable populations, use of supervision, ethical and legal issues, professionalism and cultural considerations. An extensive field placement orientation to the HUS department’s educational expectations of the student and contractual obligations within a community based agency are explored. Finally, the course will provide the crucial elements for the design of a profesional ePortfolio.
