Creating computer applications, instead of just using them, will give you a deeper understanding of the essential possibilities of computation. Through weekly problems, students will learn the fundamentals of programming the computer (variables, conditionals, iteration, functions, and objects). These tools are the basic building blocks of programming needed to create cutting-edge graphics applications including interactive art, live video processing, and data visualization. The Java-based ‘Processing’ programming environment is the primary vehicle for the class. The end of the semester is spent developing an idea for a final project and implementing it using computer programming.

This course explores research and documentation for all media formats including text, images, sound, and multimedia. Students will examine the full lifecycle of information, including: how information is produced and organized in both traditional and emerging media, locating information sources in a variety of media and formats, critical evaluation of sources, the ethics of information use, and documentation and citation of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will create and present research and documentation projects.

We will examine broad themes such as family and home, the individual and society, good and evil, and the conflicts surrounding globalization. Specifically, we will examine the fascinating and yet confusing concept of globalization, especially its relation to literature. The central questions that we will ask in this class are: what does globalization feel like?, and, what does it feel like to be transnational? The novels, short stories, non-fiction essays, and poems that we will read will help us answer this question, for literature is very good at revealing and performing feelings.
