This course emphasizes the architectural process involved in designing small to medium size projects for specific building types. The process includes initial research and analysis, program development, flow diagrams, schematic design, and massing studies, the development of schematic 3D models, plans and sections, through final presentation. Final presentations will include drawings and physical models reviewed by a design jury.
There will be two projects and a final portfolio. Research papers, 2D and 3D drawings, and physical study models and final models will be utilized in program development, design and presentations. Digital files for all interim assignments, the final projects and the portfolio will be submitted to the instructor for grading and record purposes.

This course presents the basis for an understanding of structural behavior and design, with an emphasis placed on the theoretical and practical application of structural design principles for new and existing urban small-scale building structures. The fundamental scientific framework of mechanics, strength of materials, structural analysis and architectural design integration will be addressed. Conditions encountered during renovations and their solutions will be included. The course is presented in lecture and discussion sessions in conjunction with homework assignments. Students are expected to participate in class by asking and responding to questions, relating relevant experiences, offering opinions, etc. Exams and quizzes will be given based on class lectures and discussions, reading assignments and notes.

This course is an exploration of abstract architectural design theory
in the expression of three-dimensional space. The creation of comprehensive architectural design projects are developed following a building program and incorporating elements of site, enclosure, structure, material and technology. Design concepts and vocabulary are introduced and strengthened through design projects. A juried presentation will take place at the completion of each project.
