This course teaches students to create finished, professional-quality sequential illustrations combining words and pictures based on topical themes, autobiographical stories, and self-guided narratives. Topics and strategies include storytelling focusing on single-panel, multi-panel, and multiple-page sequential illustrated stories. Projects will be completed using an array of digital and traditional media. This class will focus on sequential art: sequential art can be comic books, graphic novels, children’s books, comic strips, and more. Internship in Communication Design (Hybrid) Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately 15+ plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Open Lab.

COMD3501 D236 IDENTITY DESIGN SP2020

In this course students will partner with Hospitality Program students to create a visual identity for a restaurant. Hospitality students will provide a concept and menu items and together, students will develop the name, logo and menu designs. Students will explore the elements that make an identity appropriate, engaging and cohesive. Color palette, iconography and type selection will be discussed with Hospitality clients. Designers will present their Hospitality clients with options and discuss possibilities. Menus will be comped and formally presented at the end of the 7th week. In the second portion of the course design students will be working on their own to further develop the identity elements. They will design applications such as signage, an ad campaign, communications package and develop guidelines for logo usage. The final project will be presented in a printed and bound book. Slide lectures, assigned readings, videos and class critiques will augment the design process.

COMD1100_D108 – Graphic Design Principles 1

This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop basic skills in two- dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design.
