UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM @ CITYTECH

The Undergraduate Mathematics Teacher Education degree program (BS in Mathematics Education) is designed to prepare middle school and high school mathematics teachers (grades 7-12) for service. It is an integral part of the Mathematics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at City Tech.

The Undergraduate Mathematics Teacher Education program is a New York State registered and approved program that qualifies students for license upon successful degree completion. The program is aligned with the national standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and is accredited by NCTM/CAEP.

The Mathematics Department at City Tech strives to equip pre-service teachers with strong backgrounds in mathematics, and solid pedagogical knowledge and skills. In Brooklyn in particular, our program has been recognized for its excellence, and for the preparedness of our students for the classroom. Many are hired at local schools, often in the school in which they have done their student teaching. Our graduates are competitive in finding teaching positions in NYC and New York State, and are well prepared for graduate school, whether in mathematics education or pure mathematics.

Our teacher candidates spend over 120 hours observing secondary school classes, and engage in an intensive intermediate clinical experience, in which they aid their teachers-mentors in their classrooms, who help them plan and teach several lessons. Their initial and intermediate clinical experience is followed by a full-time student teaching practicum in partnering public schools in Brooklyn, which prepares them to teach in grades 7-12.

Our pre-service teachers are exposed to the latest theories of learning, best practices and effective pedagogical approaches, including inquiry-based, concept-based and collaborative whole-class and small-group teaching and learning. Teacher candidates focus on developing pedagogical approaches designed to motivate middle and high school students, and to equip them for successful problem solving. They learn to plan and deliver lessons with mathematics-specific technologies as aids for concept-based teaching and learning. In the preparation of our candidates, much emphasis is placed on working with ELL students and students with special learning needs. Our teacher candidates gain experience working with inclusion students first in their course work, and later in their initial and intermediate fieldwork and student teaching practicum. Finally, our program places strong emphasis on learning mathematics, and on developing an appreciation for the connections between the field and other subjects, as well as its relevance to social issues.
