Course Resources

Lecture 1 Read Lec1-Introduction to Engineering Materials on Introduction to engineering materials and their applications.

Lecture 2   Read The lecture on Interatomic Bonding by H.K. Khaira.  Lecture2- Interatomic Bonding .

Find Periodic Table here. Periodic Table

Lecture 3    Read Lecture-3- Crystal Structure  on  structure of crystalline solids. Read  Lecture3 Addendum- Atomic Packing Factor, Crystal Plane And Diffraction on Sample packing factor calculation. Also learn about Crystal point, direction, plane and Diffraction. Read class lecture Lecture3 Addendum-Miller indices and Crystal Diffraction- Class lecture.  Read Additional lecture on Lec 3 Addendum-Miller Indices Miller Indices and Diffraction. End of the Lecture Participate on the practice problems.

Lecture 4 :  This lecture will cover the physics behind the imperfections in solids, types of imperfections and effect of solid solutions in imperfections. Hume-Rothery rules determines the criteria for Solid solution. Grain boundary is another type of imperfections caused by abnormalities during crystallization and manufacturing process. Grain size determines the strength and thermal stability of solids. ASTM standard is a guideline for grain size determination.

Read Imperfections in Solids in Chapter 4-Imperfections in Solids.

Read Chapter4-Concept of Solid Solution   for Solid Solution Determination using Hume-Ruthery Rules.

Lecture 5: Grain size estimation. Read  Chapter 4-Grain size Calculation for ASTM Grain Size Calculation.

Read ASTM grain size determination process-
