Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology and Industrial Design Technology (MECH Department) website at New York City College of Technology (City Tech). I am very pleased that you are interested in our programs.
Mechanical engineering is a field of manufacturing, mechanical systems, materials science for making machinery, cars, robots, ships, airplanes, drones, and other manufacturing products. It is based on technical hands-on and computer skills integrated with principles of engineering physics and mathematics. Industrial design is an area of product development through the design techniques used in the manufacturing process for mass production.
City Tech’s MECH department offers three programs in Mech and Design: the Associate Degree in Industrial Design Technology (AAS in IND), the Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, (AAS in MET), and the Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (BTech in MET). These Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ETAC/ABET).
Through the programs, you will learn manufacturing processes, mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials testing, the strength of materials, as well as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), operation of CNC machinery & industrial equipment, 3D solid modeling, 3D printing, programming, etc. If you would like to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer/technologist or industrial designer, the programs are perfect for you.
Please talk to faculty, staff, and current students in the Department. They will be enthusiastic about talking to you and happy to give you more information about the MECH Department community, campus life, and future career paths.
We are looking forward to seeing you on campus or online.
Sincerely,
Dr. Masato R. Nakamura, Chair of the MECH Department
