BUF 2204 Global History of Dress and Textiles is a course that examines the development of clothing and textiles from prehistory through the Industrial Era around 1800. The course explores historic garment styles, textile traditions, and fabric production across diverse regions including Asia, Europe, the Islamic World, Africa, and the Americas. Students study how culture, religion, trade, technology, and social structures influenced the evolution of dress throughout history. By analyzing historical garments and textiles, the course highlights the artistic, cultural, and functional significance of fashion in different societies. The course concludes with a research paper and presentation that allows students to investigate a specific garment or textile tradition from one of the regions studied, strengthening both research and analytical skills.
