Readings

The following list of readings is listed in reverse-chronological order.  Unless otherwise noted pages and sections refer to Lay’s Linear Algebra and its Applications 4th edition.

  • For lesson 9 please read sections 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.  A review of sections 1.8 and 1.9 may be helpful.
  • For lesson 5 please review row echelon form, reduced row echelon form and pivot positions in chapter 1. They are introduced in section 1.2, used in sections 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 for the analysis of systems of linear equations and in section 1.7 for the analysis of linear independence. Please familiarize yourself with their definition and both applications, and bring any questions with you to class.
  • For lesson 4 please read chapter 1.
  • For lesson 2 please read pages 24-39, skipping  examples 5 and 6 on pages 29 through 31 and the portion labelled “Existence of Solutions”, section 2.1 and look at pages 395 and 401 for the terms ‘symmetric matrix’ and ‘quadratic form’.
