Your first OpenLab assignment is to introduce yourself to your classmates.  This assignment is due Thursday, January 29, at the start of class. Late submissions will receive partial credit.

Assignment. Write a comment in reply to this post (scroll to the bottom to find the “Leave a Reply” box).  Your comment should be at least 2 paragraphs in length.  In the first paragraph, introduce yourself in whatever way you wish (what do you want your classmates to know about you?).  In the second paragraph, choose ONE of the following two topics and write a response. Don’t forget to tell us which topic you chose.

Topics (choose ONE).

  1. Was math ever your favorite subject? If so, when was it? What about math made it your favorite? If math has never been your favorite subject, what about it do you not like?
  2. Sometimes people can recognize a time when their opinion of math dramatically changed either for the better or the worse. Tell us about it.

Extra Credit. For extra credit, write a response to one of your classmates’ comments. Do you feel the same? Did you learn anything? Do you have any advice? Be kind.

  1. Hello everybody, my name is Mariam Gilani, I just transferred here because it seemed like a better fit for me and I’m in my second year. My major is Computer systems/B-Tech. I’ve done a few tech internships and hope to continue on into Data science. I love watching documentaries especially ones about space. I’m also shy, but once you get to know me I break out of my shell. In my free time I cook, bake and play with makeup which allows me to be creative and to relieve some stress. One thing i’m looking forward to this year is to travel more! Can’t wait to hear from everyone!
Going off of the second topic, In 9th grade my opinion of math changed dramatically. I used to hate it and found it boring, but my teacher made me love it and showed me how interesting it could be. The time I found it most interesting was when we applied it with the real world since it made more sense to me. However, moving up in math it seemed to get a lot more difficult and i continued to have a love/hate relationship. I would either love it or hate it. No in between. I’m not a strong math student, but I do well in class. Once it’s time to take a test I get nervous and don’t do well. So that plays a role in my feelings with numbers. My opinion always alters, if i totally get a topic I love it, if I struggle with a topic I start to hate it again.

  2. Hello, My name is Eugene Mantey. I transferred to City Tech in the spring 2019 from Alfred State College. I was majoring in Electrical Engineering Technology. I changed my major to Mechanical Engineering Technology, because it included some designing factor that I wasn’t able to do in my previous major. I’m a car enthusiast and always have been ever since I was 6 years old, which is why most movies I watch include fast cars and racing. I plan on doing an internship this summer to give me a better understanding of the engineering world and to see what i can bring to the table. My goal as a Mechanical Engineer is to work on project around the world and to experience during countries lifestyle, in which my skills can played a part in different cultures.

Math was never really my favorite subject. I always thought of math as just an important tool that you need in life. Back then, math was just an okay subject to me. Over the years, I’ve had teacher that are hard to communicate with when I’ve had trouble understanding some concepts. So subject became just something that is required. Now I see Math as a frustrating subject, because there alot more concepts that I’ll be introduced to in which I’m not going to find interesting. I don’t know if one day, my opinion would change but it’s not changing at this time.

  3. Hello, my name is Stefan Gobern I just recently returned to school about a year ago after being out for a few years due unforeseen circumstances and trying my best to make up for lost time. My major is Computer Science/AS and unfortunately City Tech does not have a BA/BS degree in it so I will be transferring once I complete my AS. I don’t have many hobbies but I do watch a lot of science, tech, and engineering, documentaries/series other than that I spend most of my time reading manga and playing video games.
I personally think I’m well rounded when it comes to most subjects and can’t say I have any favorite but I can say for sure I’m better at math because it’s like a puzzle and every new topic is just a new puzzle to figure out for me but I can’t say for sure since it just clicks for me pretty easily after a few examples.

  4. Hello, my name is Maria. This is my second year in City Tech and I plan to major in nursing. Nursing has to be one of the most competitive majors and I hope I can get in for the Fall semester. When I first started college I was in Hospitality but I changed my decision because it wasn’t something I really looked forward to. I want to help people and I like learning about the human body and the way it works. During my free time I like to go to the gym or just do makeup.
In response to topic 1, Math was one of my favorite subjects throughout my high school years. I found it fun for some reason and I always liked helping others when they didn’t understand it. Geometry was my favorite because it was much more easier. Then I came to college and it all changed. I am no longer a fan and I hope I can grasp on all the concepts for this semester.

  5. Hi, my name is Nicolas Joseph. I am a transfer student from La Guardia Community College and this is my second semester at City Tech. I transferred here because I graduated from La Guardia with an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. I am here to get my Bachelor’s degree. I play a lot of sports like handball, badminton, table tennis, and soccer. My dream job is to work at Con Edison.
There was a point in time where math was my favorite subject. This was in freshman year of high school when it was just about algebra. I really enjoyed how simple and complicated algebra can be. However, i stopped liking math when i started geometry. i could never fully grasp all of its concepts. My dislike for math only got worse when it came to trigonometry and pre-calculus. Math was fun at first, but the further it got away from numbers and started incorporating imaginary numbers I just couldn’t figure out most of what I was doing.

  6. Hi my name is Brianna Persaud. This is my second year in City Tech and pursuing an electrical engineer degree. Engineering field is a very hard degree to finish, but Im hoping with determination and dedication, I can do it. I am hoping to get my bachelors degree and move on to another school for my masters.
In response to topic 1, I feel all throughout school math has been my favorite subject. It is a vert challenging topics with ups and downs, but I am determined to excel. Calc is a tough one for me, but im hoping this semester will help me. The different types of questions given are what intrigue me because once I get it, I can’t stop.

  7. Hello, my name is Lizbeth Garcia. This is my second year here at City tech. My major is Civil Engineer. One of the reasons I decided to go for Civil Engineer is because is a career where the majority are man and I’ll like to imply and help us women stick out on things we usually don’t do. If you aren’t aware of what civil engineer are, we create, improve and protect the environment in which we live. We plan, design and oversee construction and maintenance of building structures and infrastructure, such as roads, railways, airports, bridges, and many more. The more I get involved in my career the more interest I become even when I’m the only female in the class.

Math has always been my favorite subject, ever since I can remember. It’s actually how I end it up choosing my major. Ever since I was little and my mom would go grocery shopping when I got home I’ll take a calculator and start adding all the prices in the groceries. When I was a senior in High School I was taking AP Calculus and that’s when it started getting a little challenging but I personality like a challenge, all you have to do is set your mind to it and you can accomplish anything. My favorite thing about math is how much you can get out of just a few variables or one simple function.

  8. Hi my name is Samar Mahmood I’m a biomedical informatics student at city Tech. I have always been interested in science I am planning to finish my bachelor’s and go to P.A school. I don’t have many hobbies but love playing badminton .
Math was my favorite until algebra but after that it got harder and more complex. Math seems to me a challenging subject with every level it gets harder and Difficult but I am always willing to learn I’m going to give my best by practicing more and more .

  9. Hi, my name is Genesis Torres. I’m on my final year at City Tech, majoring in Computer Systems with a Networking and Security concentration. What many people don’t know is that when I first went into to college I was majoring and music recording technology and then switched to radiology. After trying my best to make it into the radiology program I realized how much I didn’t like it. And I ended up going to the one thing I knew I was always good at but had decided to run away from and that is computers. Why these drastically different majors you ask? Well simple I knew that I wanted to do music and but I needed a back up in case it all failed and I couldn’t decide what to do since I didn’t like anything else. And computers I was always good at but never did I think it was going to turn into a career but the universe works in mysterious ways and here I am finishing my bachelor degree in Computer Systems.
In response to topic 1, math was never my favorite subject because I was never good at it. So much so that every single report card that I got since I was a child said that my math skills needed a lot of help. And because of this I’ve spend so many hours of my life attending tutoring but even then I was never amazing at it. I guess some people were made for math and unfortunately others were not.

  10. Hi, my name is Zarah Mughal. I’m studying civil engineering and still got a long way to go. When i’m not studying i’m watching anime or k-dramas. Nothing makes me cry more than a good k-drama besides college. It’s okay though because my cats are always there to dry up my tears. I have three demonic cats whom i love immensely. I still want more because you can never have enough cats. I don’t know if i’m on the way to becoming a crazy cat lady or if i’m already there.
I’ve never and i mean NEVER liked math. The part I don’t like is that if it isn’t taught the right way, i won’t understand it. Math has always been a struggle for me. Also, I don’t like how we don’t get the formulas given to us for exams. It would make math easier for those who have a hard time remembering (like me). I hope this class changes my mind about math.

    1. I can relate most definitely on the Math has always been a struggle for me becaue even back in high school I had a lot of problems with trigonometry which I learned how to get through it in college and what type of anime do you watch and what type of breed is your cats?

    2. Same here! I don’t like math and math doesn’t like me either. The part where you said if math isn’t taught the right way you won’t understand it, I feel the same. I need to see a lot more of example problems for each topic in order to sort of understand how things work. I see that we have more in common with our hobbies, such as watching anime or k-dramas. Although I rarely watch k-dramas only if it’s interesting enough I’ll watch it. I’m more into Korean variety shows.

  11. Hi, My name is Nida Khawaja. This is my second year in City tech. For now I am majoring in Liberal Arts & Sciences. I really don’t know what I really wanna do in life. My hobbies are playing games, or just chilling in my room listening to music and photography. I do love to play sports like basketball, and volleyball.
#1. Math has always been my favorite subject. I have to choose between writing an essay for taking a math test . I’d pick the test. It became my favorite subject back in elementary school. I like how it has one answer and everything equals up.

  12. Hi, my name is ZhiHuiLi. Currently, I ’m studying computer engineering. I will play video games in my free time because you don’t need to use your mind to play video games, I mean you just have to play without thinking about complicated things.
I don’t like math since high school, because I often forget the equations. Even if I review it the night before the exam, I will forget the time when I took the exam. Although I worked hard to memorize the equations, I still couldn’t face the math as easily as everyone else.

  13. Hello, My name is Alliu Yusuf. People mispronounce my name all the time but it’s all good. I wanna be great in life and I’m also working on starting a Youtube channel. I love pets and over this past years, I’ve been contemplating about getting one. I watch YouTube all day and do my homework late at night. I have a family of 8, one brother and the rest of my siblings are female, including my parent. I play basketball and soccer.
I love math and it’s my favorite subject. From third grade, I had put my dedication into math and promised myself I would not get a bad grade in a math class ever again. I had difficulties but I overcame all the obstacles. I love math because it deals with the aspect of going step by step and I relate that to my life. At times, it gets complicated and that’s when I buckle and put more effort in it.

  14. Hello everyone, my name is Sheriann Mc Larty. I am Biomedical Informatics major. This is my second semester here at NYCCT. I transferred from Kingborough CC with my associates in Biology in the fall of 2019. Upon completing my bachelor’s here at NYCCT I would like to work in a medical lab. I have my own business making candles and bath body products.

In regards to topic one, Math was never my favorite subject. My favorite subject was social studies. I find mathematics to be a very challenging and intriguing subject. I am able to grasp concepts when taught in a manner I am able to comprehend. To learn Mathematics you have to make a few mistakes to get your aha moment and memorize formulas and it definitely messes with my confidence for that subject. I am aiming for a great semester for learning Calculus, this is my first time taking it and I want to excel and have fun while learning this subject.

  15. Hello, my name is Yeonseon Lee. Currently, I’m in the fashion business and technology. I am shy but would like to talk with people also. This year, for me, It is really special because I am at a turning point in my life. I have to decide whether I keep going to my major or change it.
In my free time, I like to study new languages, watch makeup product reviews, or do makeup.
I also trying an internship this year.

In response to topic 1, math was my favorite subject back then. I thought math clearly showed my efforts. If I study it more and more, my math skill was presenting equally. I like d various ways of solving problems either. As a person have strengths and weakness, I couldn’t do well in geometry and a vector. Still, I like math, but now I’m struggling with some topics of math either.

  16. Hello, my name is Gabriela Torres. My major is architecture and I finally love my major but it can be a love-hate relationship. Some fun facts about me is that I love tennis, I have two siblings and I have two pets. I picked up tennis during the summer and been hooked and one of my favorite player is Roger Federer. I have a cat named Mickey and a dog named Pablo.
When it comes to math it was never my favorite subject but I do remember liking math in the 6th grade but I am not sure what happened after that. I am not really good at math it always takes me time to understand the concept.

  17. Hi My Name is Chadel Dowridge I’m studying EMT and this is my last semester before I get my associates then I’m going for my BA in the subject. I like amine and sleep but I’m a funny soul and I’m also an father to a beautiful daughter and a husband to my wife (If you want to see them just ask)

I used to like math before in the 11th grade but after that I haven’t liked it at all I’m guessing that’s what college does to you I guess but anyway the reason why I liked math was because of my teacher in high school he was such a good teacher which made me like it but now I’m college I haven’t had a very good math professor yet and I hope that this class changes that. And I noticed the change with math with me I used to be very good at it but ever since I came to college that’s when I lost is all and I never was the same again.

  18. Hello, my name is Albi Xhuveli. My major is computer sciemce and I hope to complete an associates degree at citytech. The coding languages that I am familiar with are C++ and python. I am aiming to get a better understanding of calculus and achieve an A as my grade.

  19. Hi, my name is gjok nokaj( most people call me joe). Im from kosovo and have moved here since 2011. Im here at city tech studying electrical engineering. Im looking forward to this calculus class.

  20. Hello, my name is Nixander De Leon. You can call me Nick. I am a senior at the school and my major is Computer Systems, going for the IT route. I have been using computers since 1998 when I was 4 years old, starting on a Dell desktop with Windows 98. Since then, my passion for computers has only grown. I wish to become a successful IT in the future.
Throughout school, my opinion on Math would change constantly. Throughout elementary school I liked it, but when I reached high school I started to really hate it. I didn’t do well on the regents and ended up having to take remedial math when I started college. But in College, I actually began to like it and understand it more. I had professors that were much better at explaining it and took their time doing so. Maybe I was also smarter and matured at this point, but I also think it had to do with the many distractions that can happen in high school, especially your friends. Today, I enjoy math much more and understand it better. As long as I go over it and study it consistently, I won’t have too much trouble with it.

  21. My name is Madison. I’m a liberal arts & sciences major, and I’m getting my associates in applied science by the end of this semester. After, I plan on applying to a nursing program. I’ve actually always had a love-hate relationship with science similar to the one I have with math. I was never that interested in science when I was younger, but after taking psychology and more in depth science classes, I knew nursing was something I wanted to give a shot.

    2. Although I was never too interested in science, math was a little different. It’s not that I wasn’t interested, but I never felt confident enough to ask questions. In elementary school when my mom would help me with math homework it usually ended in us bickering back and forth. Because we were learning new math techniques than the ones she learned in catholic school, we weren’t always on the same page. On top of that, my mom gets numbers and math with ease and that intimidated me. I would get frustrated when I couldn’t figure something out in its entirety and save it for the next day. It wasn’t until middle/high school that I actually began to enjoy math. I think after Algebra I became more comfortable asking questions. I was also in an environment where I was introduced to online sources to help me. Once I realized that I could take on more challenging topics with a little help, I became more confident and eager to learn and actually understand what I was learning.

  22. Hi, my name is Fanny Huang. My major is biomedical informatics. There’s a lot of science, math, and computer involved. Hopefully, I can pass all my classes this semester. I’m worried because I’m a full-time student and working part-time. During my free time, I watch anime or read translated japanese novels to relax. I’m allergic to cats and scared of dogs, so I enjoy watching them from far away for my own safety.
Math was never my favorite subject because I have a hard time understanding them. They are like another language to me. I struggle a lot to pass my math classes throughout my life. It’ll be nice if all math formulas are provided on exams and final. Maybe doing more problems for each topic that are similar to the questions in the final will make learning math easier.

  23. Hello everyone. My name is Mohammed Ali. I am from Bangladesh. I came to the USA in 2010 and went back to Bangladesh and came back again in 2014. I started my high school here in NYC in 2015 and graduated in 2018. I am in CST major at NYCCT and would like to transfer to NYCC in the fall of 2020. I would like to do CSE at NYCC and work for a firm as a software engineer.
In regards to topic one, Math is my favorite subject even though I am in another major. I like math because even though sometimes it is complicated but I have fun when I do maths and solve a complex problem. Math has a strict algorithm to be followed which actually made me interested in math because as I am doing programmings, i have to follow some algorithms to solve problems, and math is the only one that actually teaches me the in order algorithms which help me to follow the programming algorithms.
