    1. Describe what the urban sustainability index proposes to do.

The urban sustainability index proposes to fill the gap in current analysis of sustainable development. Also, they measure the performance of cities in emerging markets on a common set of sustainability categories. finally, their goal was to gauge not only the environmental sustainability of cities but also city officials’ commitment to handling their growing urban populations in a sustainable way, and their efficiency in using resources.

    2. Describe three components of this index and comment on whether you view this as achievable.

Three of the components of this index that I view as achievable are: “green” urban planning, integrated large-scale recycling, and cross-departmental coordination.

The authors were not satisfied with current standards of measuring a city’s sustainability performance, so they have created their own set of standards called the Urban Sustainability Index. They created the index to “fill the gap in current analysis of sustainable development”. It measures city performance in accordance to five categories :Basic Needs, Resource Efficiency, Environmental Cleanliness, Built Environment and Commitment to future sustainability.
    2. Three parts of the index include Basic Needs, Resource Efficiency and Environmental Cleanliness. Though these can be difficult to implement well in developing cities, it can certainly be achieved as long as there is a strong commitment in both the government and the masses.

1.The Urban Sustainability Index, seeks to measure and assess the performance of cities across a range of criteria using five categories. All the underlying indicators used for creating the index have normative benchmarks. The Urban Sustainability Index measures the sustainability performance of cities as percentage of the benchmark.

2.The most important component of the index is Basic needs which is giving people access to water supply, housing, health and education, if people have access to this component of the index the following indexes will come after. People with education will make it easier to make Resource efficiency, to have a Environmental cleanliness and so on.

    Urban Sustainability Index
    1.
Urban sustainability index is a performance measurement of sustainability for the upcoming markets in city life. It works on the environment sustainability of cities in way that growing urban population does not affect the environment and city can use their resources more efficiently. Urban sustainability mainly proposed five categories and eighteen individual factors to in order to maintain the sustainability of the cities. The five factors are: basic needs, resource efficiency, environmental cleanliness, built environment and commitment to future sustainability.
    2.
Basic need: The most common category for urban sustainability is basic needs. It includes access to safe water, enough living space, adequate health care and education.

Resource efficiency: In city life resources are very limited. So, it is a good idea to use these limited resources efficiently. The city which uses the energy and water more efficiently and recycle the waste properly can provide a better life to the city members.
Environmental cleanliness: Less pollution of city environment correlates positively with the city’s livability.
All of these three components are achievable. Government has to ensure the basic need of the citizens. Renewable energy can play a big role for resource efficiency. Awareness among the city people also needed for recycling the waste and maintaining environment cleanliness.
