Part 2: Summary

Throughout “For some, the Pandemic Has Helped Them Find Their Style” Lia Picard, proves just how beneficial the pandemic was to allow people to learn and find their own sense of fashion. During the many months of the pandemic and overall time of the Corona Virus, individuals such as Laken Brooks, Amelia Crook,Sara Camposarcone, and Alicia Kennedy all used this time to find their “Style in Solitude.” For a few working in a business setting forced them to wear uncomfortable clothing in order to keep up a professional appearance. However once they began working from home, they discovered clothes that allowed them to feel more comfortable. Specifically Laken Brooks discovered leggings which were previously deemed unprofessional are now a staple in her at home wardrobe. But being comfortable didn’t only refer to stretchy or loose fabric, it also meant some like Amelia Crook,Sara Camposarcone, and Alicia Kennedy figured out what way of dressing made them happy and not subsiding their creativity for the likes of others. Sara Camposarcone went from traditional office outfits to ones that were dramatic and composed of many colors, patterns, and layers. Not every change led to dramatic looks, some found a style of simplicity containing slip dresses, or oversized shirts and biker shorts.

Part 3: Reflection

From this article I have learned just how many ways your wardrobe can truly affect who you are. Or even how what you wear is constantly affected by what society chooses to be appropriate or what your style should be depending on your profession, body type, or race. Some people felt almost forced or bullied into what they wore pre-pandemic. There was almost a silent dress code that you knew not to break. If you weren’t skinny you couldn’t wear cropped tops or tight fitting clothes that rule also applied if you are a mother. It was also seen as weird to dress out of the norm. Meaning if you dressed alternative, or extremely colorful, you’re bound to get some judgemental looks. But during the pandemic something about about the worlds mindset changed. I’m not sure if maybe seeing how loved ones were getting sick or losing their lives directed their focus on more important matters rather than what someone is wearing. Since then many individuals have brought forth their new styles, no longer bothered about those around them, but it’s honestly come to a point where no one even cares what your wearing anymore. Most found what style suits them and makes them happy even if it’s loud and a huge eye turner like what Ms. Camposarcone wears, or simple mundane outfits like Ms. Kennedy. I too experienced a change in my outfits after the pandemic, I felt more free to wear my edgy/ goth style clothes that I previously was bullied out of.

The author of this article used an almost inspirational tone. Her purpose was to inform people who are daring enough to change their style that they can and show how many others did the same. The genre is a factual news report and its goal was to tell others about the changes occurring around the world in everyone’s closets. The NYT is a credible source because its known to share truthful current events and is written by qualified writers in their particular genre.

Part 4: Notable Quotes

“A couple of weeks into working from home, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and ordered a pair of leggings, having previously sworn them off lest they be considered too unprofessional.”(Picard, 2022)

““Previously I bought clothes to fit in,” Ms. Crook said in a Zoom interview. “That was a big revelation for me. It was like, I have my work wardrobe, I have my mom wardrobe, and these are the acceptable things to wear.” While she didn’t necessarily dislike her clothes before the pandemic, she realized that she was dressing for others.”(Picard, 2022)

“Before the pandemic, her clothes were mostly black and her style was trend focused, Ms. Camposarcone said.

She now wears vibrant colors, layers and textures.”(Picard, 2022)

  1. Summary: Don’t forget that this Research Project was about how Corona Virus affected _____. So did the article posit that Co-vid or coming out of co-vid isolation was a factor in enouraging these people to find a new creative style, or to find their creative inner-selves? HOw has style changed post-pandemic? Does the article discuss this at all?

Reflection: You write — From this article I have learned just how many ways your wardrobe can truly affect who you are. YOU COULD HAVE SAID THIS REGARDLESS OF THE PANDEMIC!
BORING — Again REMEMBER that this project has a pandemic factor. So have you learned that a pandemic and being in isolation and then coming out can truly affect who you are???? THINK MORE closely on your own reflection and the ways covid has disrupted previously accepted fashion dictates. Yes I encourage you to think of positive ways covid has changed style. Given people freedom that they did not have pre pandemic. And think of the way covid has DISRUPTED hierarchies of dress/style/fashion. What did people used to do and did they do it because there were rules? NOW after the pandemic how are people flouting those rules???? Now that would be interesting!

You say: But during the pandemic something about about the worlds mindset changed. I’m not sure if maybe seeing how loved ones were getting sick or losing their lives directed their focus on more important matters rather than what someone is wearing. SO WHAT DO YOU TYHINK CHANGED? Why are people less judgemental? Why do people no longer care what others think? How has the pandemic changed the way people think about clothing, style, ….?
